I’ll save you the trouble of reading the story ; the “sneaky ploy” is when the person at the counter asks if you want to upgrade. Thats it. If YOU sign an agreement for a higher priced good or service when you were asked if you would like to upgrade...you waive the right to be shocked it costs more. Thats on you.

“I went through the drive through the other day and got scammed out of money! They asked if I would like to make my #2 combo a large and I said yes, of course I want a large combo. Sweet! Turns out they charged me more money for it! No one told me more was going to cost more! I’ll never eat there again!”

Perfect analogy.

Always, always ask if it’s a free upgrade or if it’s more $$.

Rental agencies are sneaky though. You ask for a compact SUV, and they give you a Jeep Renegade instead.

Those rental folk are sneaky. Like crabs. They work in pairs.

That whole school of thought makes my blood boil... The “it’s not my fault/it’s a scam because I didn’t pay attention/understand when it was explained to me” school of though that is.

At the rental counter, I would ask, “Same price?” At McDonalds, it would not occur to me to do so.

I asked for a mitsubishi mirage and they gave me a Jeep Compass recently. Still can’t decide if it was an upgrade or not.

Or you could just sign up for Hertz #1 Club Gold or Avis Preferred and avoid all the counter garbage.

On a work training trip in 2012, I had the (dis)pleasure of being “upgraded” from my “economy car” rental to a Chrysler 200. It was classified by Enterprise as a “full size”, I believe.

Yes, but I can see where you’re going with it. I have had numerous occasions where they pulled that on me, I said, “no”, and got upgraded ANYWAYS because they were out of the size I reserved.

Dont think I’ve had that happen at McDonald’s

I had the same thing happen to me with a 200. I was excited because it was new and looked good, I thought. By the time I got to the hotel 30 minutes later, I hated it with a passion.

In all fairness, if you’re used to free room and flight upgrades, and you don’t understand that rental car companies are Satan incarnate, I can see how you’d assume that a rental car upgrade would also be free.

I took it as more of con, like “The rental fee is the same”, but the insurance they want you buy and any other fees would be jacked up in price. But, I only skimmed the article, because I’m too lazy to read things fully.

Doesn’t mean you still can’t have fun with it.

If you get to the window, and the price is different, you can just sit there, and place your order again.

From the start.

Ask for it to be made fresh.

I would then inspect my order, and return something because it had pickles on it - ask it to me made fresh.

No, that’s OK. I don’t need to move my car, I’m in no hurry.

Then I would inspect it again, and do the same thing because it now had ketchup on it - ask for it to be made fresh.

By this time, I would need new french fries because the ones I had were cold.

Eventually, I would have said, “Boy, this would have gone a lot quicker if you didn’t try to change my order 15 minutes ago..”

Actual supervisor escalation call I took today, a customer purchased a desktop computer without built in wifi, and felt her ISP should provide her a wifi card because it is not her responsibility to get connected to the internet that’s what she pays for.
