So, I have a 2nd generation iPod Touch, because it works great and I’m not going to waste a whole paycheck on replacing it. I also drive for Lyft, and as such, I have a playlist of all my non-explicit music. It’s 555 songs. However, when I set it to shuffle, it will suddenly show “1/553" instead of playing everything. I know that one of the two problem songs is “Children’s Story” by Slick Rick, and if I play that one first and THEN turn on shuffle, it will say 1/554. However, it and the other undetermined song will never, ever play unless I choose them manually. So... What gives? How do I make it play ALL my music on shuffle?

Side note: “Living in Oblivion” by Ultravox will play about 1/5 the time, but every other time it’s either just a couple minutes of silence or it skips immediately. I don’t care too much about that one, though, as I’m used to songs just never playing. (“Wild Boys” by Duran Duran and Big Country’s self-titled track have never played once.)

I can attest to this. I’ve got a 4th gen iPod no matter how many songs, any playlist, it picks a few songs and plays them 90% of the time. It used to drive me crazy, I’ve since become a spotify user.

No experience with the shuffle per se, but I have noticed that files can tend to corrupt themselves, especially if they’ve been copied and re-copied over the years. My copy of Far’s “Job’s Eyes” off the Buffy soundtrack insists its about 300 minutes long when you look at it. It quits playing before that but it does occasionally seem to cause problems in some contexts. Eg my aftermarket stereo in the MJ will refuse to play anything off my iPhone while it’s connected via USB (due to “format read error”) if that one’s in the mix.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus and a fourth gen iPod touch and let me tell you that this pisses me the fuck off on a daily basis. I have yet to figure out how to fix it, but I can at least share your pain for now.

I’ve never been in a ride share that had music playing. And you play Slick Rick. Damn, you’re my kind of driver!

Kinja'd!!!

That article makes me feel old! It’s from 2012, but I bet that it was nearly 10 years ago the last time I even tried to fix it!

I remember having this exact problem back on my first Touch. I still have a classic click wheel iPod in my van.

No help on the apple front, but I can attest that moving to a Fiio x1 player from anything Ipod related was the best move I ever made. They’re about $80 from the amazon warehouse.

Hells yeah! Except my click wheel iPod has been showing it’s age recently. I think the battery is finally due for a replacement

I always ask if they have any preference in music. When they inevitably say they don’t mind, I just play whatever I want.
