Because I failed to put a wireless adapter in my computer when it was built, I have to use a D-Link USB adapter. It randomly crashes and refuses to work, but will work again for a bit by plugging it into a different slot. After a while, it will completely fail and not find a connection in any USB port, necessitating a reboot. For the love of God, help me before I destroy all my shit in a fit of rage.

its either A: move it to a wired area or B: rebuild it with a wireless adaptor.

Shit. I had an ethernet cable into it until something inside moved or broke and it wouldn’t connect. I’m getting really tired of this piece of expensive shit. Seems like it’s as unreliable as one of David Tracy’s Jeeps. New problem everyday.

*pats my little X51* only thing to ever go wrong was the graphics card shit the bed over the summer.older GTX 670 2gb. moved up to a GTX 960 4gb (it was due for an upgrade either way)

To be completely honest, I’m exaggerating out of anger. It mostly works, but internet connections are a pain in the ass. I had it custom built:

AMD FX-8320

GTX970

8gb RAM

For the most part, it’s a great gaming machine, but I really wish I’d had a bit more budget for a better processor, because I fear it’s a bit of a bottleneck.

unless the processor really is a pile, id doubt its the bottle neck. games arent as processor intensive as they are GPU intensive. other programs on the other hand, such as CAD...yea....

Games are now becoming more CPU intensive, yeah. That FX-8320 can’t really keep up anymore.

FX-8320 always was a bit of a pile, even when new.

To the point that Core i3s were beating up on it.

what’s stopping you from putting a PCIe wireless adapter in your computer now? they don’t take up much room.

yes, but even a OCd i3 can run MOST things. and that AMD wasnt exactly a powerhouse when new either, sooo.

A stock speed i3 will beat the 8320 by a fair amount in most games.

The IPC is just way too low for it to be good today.

This is what I’ve always done.

You may have to install the drivers in safe mode if you go this route.

I know very little about PCs. I had this one built, I didn’t lay a finger on it myself.

If the USB adapter is more than 2 or 3 years old, a new one costs all of 9 dollars for 802.11n and maybe 20 for 802.11ac.

I’ve never seen an ethernet jack soldered to a mainboard break off unless it was forced in some way....was it pushed back into a slot the tower sits in against a wall too far? If the cable was pushed forward into the jack, it would snap off.

You could go the route of buying a fairly reputable replacement Wifi CARD that you could install into your PC into a few minutes, or you could just buy a
replacement ethernet card that let you plug your ethernet cable back in. Installing them is easy if you’re not a computer person....shut down and unplug the machine, open the case, touch the metal chassis, and make sure the slot is clear (sometimes there is a metal cover to break off from the factory that covers unused slots....some of them are screwed into place). Just snap or unscrew that cover, slide in the card, screw the card down, close the case back up, and Windows should autodetect and install it once you start it back up.

One of these would do for a wired adapter:

One of these would do for wireless as long as you aren’t far from your WiFi router: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Wireless-PCI-Express-Adapter-TL-WN781ND/dp/B0036AFAEW/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1489578971&sr=1-4&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin%3A6011943011

I had this same exact problem with an old PC and USB WiFi adapter. I think it was drawing too much power. Anyway, I ended up using one of these Netgear WiFi range extenders for $25. It has a “bridge mode” in it that lets you plug a PC or whatever into the Ethernet port on it to connect to whatever WiFi network the extender is connected to. Worked great for a while then I got rid of the PC and now I have a smart BluRay player that is wired only hooked into it.

Well, there’s your problem. That or your your USB controller is failing. But I’d blame the D-link adapter first.
