It’s election day here in the Netherlands, so I just went to cast my vote, as is the duty of a good citizen(in my opinion).

Let’s hope indeed. But even when he gets a lot of votes, I think nobody wants to form a government with him (no single party in recent history ever got more than a third of the seats in parliament, a coalition is thus needed to be able to form a properly functioning government which has a majority of seats in the parliament) due to all his statements, and his clear racism and xenofobia. Luckily this means that he doesn’t automatically become our prime minister if his party recieves most votes, because the prime minister must be in the coalition.

For the first time in my life, I’ve been paying a substantial amount of attention to your election, and the upcoming French election. Between Orban in Hungary, Duda, Szydlo and Kaczynski in Poland, the Brexit vote, Trump in the states, and the prospects of Wilders and Le Pen, I’m a bit concerned.

Zero percent chance. It’s unlikely any party will get even 20% of the votes. Even if Wilders becomes the largest party he’d still need to find 2-3 other parties to form a coalition to get to >50%. He’d struggle to find even one party.

Don’t be too concerned about the Netherlands. Even if Wilders party becomes the largest, he’d still struggle to get even 20% of the votes. In the polls I’ve seen he’s below 20%.
I am a bit concerned about the turkey crisis though. I hope the EU and our neighboring countries grow a spine and throw so many sanctions at that bully wannabe dictator he comes crawling back on his knees, apologizing for his unacceptable childish behavior. They probably won’t though.

Remember Jorg Haider? The second time he got elected, he gathered 10% of the votes. But guess what.. other parties made compromises (aka sold their souls even further) and the coalition kept on going because, you know, power!
Genuinely, don’t be so sure of yourself on that one. Austria and Holland share a shitload politically wise...

Wilders is the second longest serving member of our 150 seat house, if I’m not mistaken. Whatever happens, there will be a 3 (most likely 4) party coalition. Wilders might get the most votes, I doubt it but it is plausible. Even then he’d need to convince 3 other parties to join him. 3 parties that know exactly what he’s up to because he’s been at it this long. Everyone dispises him and his stupid xenophobic populism which offers zero realistic solutions.
So, yes I do think it’s plausible his party becomes the largest. I expect it’ll come in #2 or 3, but 1 is possible. In the Netherlands in 2017 #1 means 20% of the votes. Even at #1 I seriously doubt he’ll be able to form a coalition and if he can’t form a coalition he won’t become prime minister.
