Utah is in the minority of states with a “presumed” speed law. i.e. the posted limit is the speed “presumed safe” under good conditions. What this means is:

Kinja'd!!!

“Utah is in the minority of states that use a “prima facie” or “presumed” speed limit law. In states that use this system for all or some of their roads, it’s legal to drive over the posted limit as long as you are driving safely. For example, if you are driving 50 miles per hour in a 40-mile-per-hour zone, you are “presumed” to be speeding. But if it is 6 a.m. on a clear, dry morning with no other cars on a wide, straight road, and you can convince the judge that you were driving safely given those conditions, you should be acquitted. That’s because you present facts that “rebut the presumption” that by going over the limit you were driving at an unsafe speed.”

Neat. I don’t speed often, but I wonder if that would work.

A good example would be the stretch of highway pictured above. 24 miles of arrow strait desert with next to no off-peak traffic and literally nothing to hit.

Pretty sure 70 is a reasonable speed here, even in the cruiser.

The road seems to be in pretty good shape too, I guess winter is really harsh on roads

So theoretically, if your car had a lot of working aero bits, you would be able to reach top speed and tell the officer that it would be harder to spin out than stay straight.

AZ has both absolute speed limits and presumed speed laws. The posted limit is the absolute speed, meaning you can get ticketed for going over it. However, you can also be ticketing if the officer determines your speed isn’t prudent even if you’re going under the absolute speed limit. This could apply to driving in adverse conditions or if you’re going way too slow.

It might work. i mean, it probably wont, but it might.

“your honor, if I had gone any slower I wouldn’t have had enough downforce or heat in the tires to feel completely safe around those corners.”

I found out that is not presumed. Its absolute with basic speed law. Utah also has basic speed law but our top speed is presumed.

I never speed outside of my home state. It’s just a good way to prevent unwanted attention. Except Nevada, Nevada sucks just gotta get it done.

Having encountered the criminal “police” there, I wouldn’t risk it on any road under a jurisdiction that wasn’t the state highway patrol.

However, UT also has a lot of highway marked so high that it’s almost impossible to speed comfortably in almost any car I’ve ever driven. Out there, people actually stay to the right except to pass and the highways work as originally intended. I’ve never seen a speed trap out there, too.

the highways work pretty good except in Utah valley and it is nice to have nice high limits.

And those limits are often set criminally-low because they’re intended exclusively for revenue generation. The last time I was in the hellhole that is Phoenix, the 6-lane freeways (totally controlled-access, not like where they merge into a surface street) were marked 40MPH near downtown in spots where the engineering would allow you to do 80MPH safely with moderate traffic.

They don’t work well in the SLC metro, either. It’s such a scary situation that I have to drive when we go up there, as my wife refuses to due to the completely insane drivers.

As a Utahn, I can assure you that any posted limit is just a suggestion and you should be going at least 5 over. You will still get run off the road no matter what speed you are going though. I-15 is a super speedway and going 90 through the 80 posted spots is barely enough. It’s even worse if you get into SLC area. Fucking deathtrap up there.

The speed limit through downtown Phoenix is 65 mph. Slowest freeway we have is 55 mph and it curves with short merging entrance lanes. Also, the fine for ten over on a freeway in AZ is around $30 with no points on your license. Most cops won’t pull ou over unless you’re fifteen over. We have surface streets with 50 mph limits. I just got let off by a cop doing 15 over on a surface street. We don’t even have photo radar anymore. Even the red light cameras are usually out of film.

Seems similar to Arizona open carry laws. Technically you can open carry an RPG, as long as you’re not threatening anyone.

If that’s true, it’s new. I’ve boycotted that shit state (I hated Phoenix long before that, since it is a soul-sucking wasteland of chain everything with zero redeeming value.) since I received a ticket there for 70-something in a 40 on I-10 in my fabulous rental PT Cruiser 7-8 years ago. It was not a construction zone and I confirmed the limit marking on my return from my customer visit there. How they got away with it, I may never know.

No, I’ve lived in Arizona my whole life. The I10 is 65-75 MPH from LA to Houston. The 10mph has been in effect for decades. It was AZs response to the federal 55mph mandate. Cops here really don’t give a shit about speeding. We even had a judge dismissing everyone’s speed camera tickets. Eventually they just took out all the cameras. I haven’t gotten a ticket in about ten years. I was pulled over and just given warnings multiple times while in college on my motorcycle. Only time I got a ticket was going 30+ over the limit up Mt. Lemmon. Cop dropped me down to 19 over. He was a bit pissed about that one,

I wish more people had the same view of Arizona as you and would stop moving here, vacationing here and going to college here. People from the coasts and the Midwest are trying to ruin my wasteland. While I hate all the chains, they help keep all the visitors away from the good local restaurants and shops.
