Oppomeet is in 10 days, and I don’t know what to drive.

At the moment, I have 4 running cars, help me choose which one to take to Spa and to “Ze Ring”. The total distance will be around 700km. I won’t need a lot of cargo space.

Kinja'd!!!

So there is:

1960 Chevy Bel Air V8. Pro: comfortable, stylish, and a real eyecatcher. Con: poor mileage, no seatbelts, no working stereo, not a track car, the longest distance I have driven it was 300km on one day.

1987 Mitsubishi Pajero 2.5TD. Pro: okay-ish mileage, I can break in the engine, I’m used to drive it for great distances. Con: the engine needs to be broken in, so it may not be the best idea to take it to a track, also, not really a track car.

2006 Audi A4 1.9TDI. Pro: good gas mileage, comfortable on long journeys, good stereo. Con: boooooring, might be (hopefully) sold until then, left me stranded 4 times in one year.

2013 Peugeot 208 GTI. Pro: best track car, might be able to chop other oppos, probably the most reliable of the bunch. Con: nothing much really.

Help me decide:

The Peugeot is the right choice, but my heart says take the Bel Air

The Mitsu Wanker would be hilarious on Spa and even better on the Ring.

But I don’t want anyone to die so take the 208 GTi.

The Bel Air. Because when was the last time somebody took a big boaty Chevy onto the ‘Ring? You don’t even have to drive it fast - just enjoy the ride. Guaranteed it’ll be on a few YouTube videos within a few days.

The Chevrolet is simultaneously the best choice and the worst choice. Therefore, it’s my pick.

But will they let you on with no seatbelt? Can you even drive it in Germany with no seatbelt??

It was built just a couple of years before seatbelts became mandatory so it’s legal.

I really love old cars, but when you’re talking about a track day, the Bel Air has no business being on a track. Might not even be legal on the track?

So I voted for the Peugeot. If you’re willing to skip the track, drive the Chevy.

Looks like seatbelts are still required to operate it on the ‘ring, though, per: http://www.nuerburgring.de/fileadmin/Touristenfahrten/Driving-Regulations-2012.pdf

Hm, I assumed that as long as cars have valid TÜV inspection they are good to go. I guess I was wrong but I’m glad seatbelts are required.

That chevy is awesome. The Peugeot is the practical safe choice but the bel air is taking a walk on the wild side. Personally, I like to live dangerously and would try to find a way to put a removable harness in there to take it on the track.

Something tells me the Pug will be the most fun given the trips to the ‘Ring and Spa, so that’s my vote.

They do say there’s an inspection to ensure StVZO compliance.

I’m wondering whether French (I think the OP is from France?) or German law allows retrofitting seatbelts, and how quickly they could get them. I voted for the Bel Air, because it’s so weird relative to what you’d see there.

The Peugeot is the obvious choice, but a (tiny) silly part of me wants to see that Bel Air roll around the ring.

Always take the most interesting car to a car meet, practicality be damned. The whole point is the stories you’ll get out of it. “The time I took a ‘60 Chevy to the Ring and got thrown out” is a WAY better story than “The time I did what everyone else did because it made more sense.”
