I never knew that radios had subchannels like you would expect in HD televisions. I found this out while test driving a 2007 Subaru WRX and instead of listening to that hop-hip muzak that normal WRX people would drive, I was promptly bombarded with a Vietnamese talk show.

Also, the current-gen WRX drove and felt like my father’s old ‘95 Legacy wagon. Dat nostalgiaaaaa . It’s a shame that they didn’t come with the 86 seats...

EDIT: For the curious who probably read my second paragraph, what I meant was that the WRX felt... Well, nice. The clutch wasn’t absurd, all 6 gears aren’t hard to find, the engine was oddly smooth... And it had this sense that it’s a capable all-rounder. And that’s why I love it.

HD Radio does. My favorite station right now is actually an HD Radio subchannel. Plays decent music and has no commercials, it’s great! Plus it sounds better than non-HD channels.

Love HD radio. AM sounds like FM, too.

I wonder if the 86 seats bolt right in. I think it would depend on if the seats were done by the Toyota or the Subaru side. Most Subaru seats swap around pretty easily. I saw someone on a forum put WRX seats in their Forester and I’ve been looking for a set in good shape at a decent price so that I can do the same.

From what I could dig up, unless you could come up with a custom bracket and/or take care of that airbag connector...

Dang. Probably not worth it then. Yeah the WRX seats are not as good as the BRZ seats. But they are better than base Forester seats.

In my area, the least-bad local station that I can reliably receive is available in both FM and HD Radio... but the HD Radio is a subchannel on another frequency. So, it won’t seamlessly fail over.

Then again, my Prius’s HD Radio receiver seems to hold onto the signal for longer than the FM signal is listenable, so failing over isn’t exactly important, but still.

The person at the dealership (who also runs the cars101.com website) did say that Subaru might put in 86 style seats in the ‘18 models.

When I asked him if they were going to go with a hatchback body, he basically shrugged.

How’s the build quality? I’ve heard it still leave something to be desired.

I only had the WRX for... 10 minutes or so, but the build quality’s actually not bad.

The ‘18's are getting optional Recaro’s as part of a facelift. They should be hitting lots any day now. Just a facelift so no hatch. If they bring it back it will be the next gen based on the 2017 Impreza chassis. Since the WRX is just now getting a facelift, I assume that will mean 2020 at the earliest for the hatch to come back, if at all.

After nearly 2 years with mine I can definitely say it leaves something to be desired. Its not like an econobox, but its not as nice as one would expect in a car that will be pushing $30,000 OTD. Still has some really cheap plastics in places.

All the interior trim makes noise going over bumps in the road. The shelf behind the rear seats has a loose plastic bit somewhere that vibrates and makes noise at low RPMS on some days. It used to be a lot worse, or maybe I’ve just grown used to it...

but then again if one is looking for a “nice” comfortable car...the WRX probably isn’t on the list anyway haha
