Kinja'd!!!

Thanks for all the input on MetroD Oppo-Meet , everyone! Let’s keep the ideas coming!

As you may have already seen, the response has been leaning heavily in favor of Hines Drive for a location, so let’s do this! We’ll hang out, have a cookout, and host a sort of “Concours d’Oppos”.

We’ll work out some of the finer details later, but first we need to set a date. We’re looking at the first weekend of May, but what works better for you, Saturday the 6th or Sunday the 7th?

Obviously, we don’t know what the weather is going to be like, but the sooner we nail down a date, the better chance we’ll have at reserving a space at the park. There are a couple of options here: Reserving an uncovered picnic area costs $25, but if we get a pavilion (roof in case of bad weather!), it’s about $100.

Obviously, we want to pick a date that can include as many Oppos as possible. And if everyone chips in, we can spread that reservation cost around so it won’t be a big deal.

And while we’re at it, let’s talk about time. MontegoMan and I are thinking mid-day. If we meet on Sunday, meeting in the afternoon can allow time for morning church-going Oppos to get here. But perhaps Saturday would be easier? What do you think?

Both weekends are good for me and no preference on Saturday or Sunday.

What city will this be in? I’m mid-Michigan, but am still interested.

Mid day Saturday or Sunday works for me. Keep in mind in the warmer months they close Hines between Outer Dr. and Ann Arbor Tr. for runners, cyclists, etc. I don’t know if they start that after Memorial Day or whenever warm.

There are several “recreation areas” along Hines Dr., but we don’t have one picked out yet. The closest major interchange is I-275 and M-14, so that should give you a good sense of how far away it is from you.

Ah, I didn’t think about that. Good call. We’ll have to find out just what our options are.

That seems to be around the Plymouth area, not too far.

Hines Drive stretches from Dearborn all the way to Northville. There are plenty of Wayne County parks along the drive.

yep, they start the beginning of May.

you can still get into Helms Haven on the Dearborn end and Nankin Mills in Westland even when they close it, but it’s still unwise with all of the pedestrian and bike traffic. Possible options would be Parkland (Dearborn,) Levan Knoll (Livonia, restroom but no shelter) or Plymouth Riverside. when I take my mountain bike down there on saturdays, I usually park my truck at Parkland.

Had no idea that was a thing.

Maybe we aim for later in the day to make the drive available to actually...drive?

Or maybe this makes Sunday more feasible.

Or we pick one of the still available to get to parks and drive once the road opens back up.

Hey, Saturday would be easier for me. I’m a church oppo who plays in the band, and has to get a family out of the church building.. I can never leave in a timely manner.

Belle Isle is a decent place for a picnic too, if Hines Drive is closed down. Plenty of parking and we can re-enact a very slow Belle Isle Grand Prix.

The 7th works better for me. The 6th is B. Nektar’s Spring Mead Fest! Which everyone should go to as well. Kind of a pre-oppo meet up / good people watching / good drinks / good food trucks.
