He should be dropping modern parts into it. I don’t understand the drive to make the old stuff work at this level. I’m not saying drop a chevy LS in it, I’m saying grab functional Jeep parts.

Or a VW TDI swap the Suzuki guys do with Samuris, That would probably do well in a CJ2A

Probably.

I mean, if he wants an underpowered 4 cylinder they are EVERYWHERE from Jeeps.

Drop a 4.0 straight six in it for something he’s familiar with.

I’m sure it would. There were a million better options than losing his mind over this old and destroyed motor.

I get the desire to bring it back to life using the original parts, but in that case, a much better vehicle should have been found. That and I wouldn’t attempt to do it under a tight deadline with a big goal of doing moab with it.

Although, I suppose the overall goal was to find a worthy subject to write about and get pageviews. In that context, its the perfect project.

I’m praying for him. Long way to go.

yup. I had invited him to join a near moab convoy around that time but im thinking it will be more likely he’ll be pulling all nighters just getting it to the EJS in the nick of time.

ESPECIALLY THE TIGHT DEADLINE CRAP..... its one thing to try and get an old junker running in a month, and go through the guts, but when you are JUST cracking open the oil pan to check the bearings/rings three days before you have to leave, forget about it. also when the guy is cracking open new cans of worms THAT weekend its just silly(steering box /differential case).

now here is where i sound conspiracy oriented, but there was a LOT of dead time in there, where no progress was posted, and he MIGHT of been working on it all along, and is just now posting up THAT progress to make it LOOK like a last second thrash.......

With the number of jeeps he owns, he’s gotta be able to build at least 5 or 6 solid running jeeps by combining parts together from other vehicles.

It just doesn’t make sense. If you want to restore a vehicle, I’m all for it. You just have to find the one with good bones. This wasn’t it. When you run into the “this isn’t it” restoration you have to know when to change plans and go resto-mod to make it functional....or trash it (as depressing as that may be)

Personally I would part it out. That way you should be able to recoup your cost at least.

USUALLY when i try and put together an old junker, and by junker i mean something with a reasonably straight body and decent guts, i end up buying three, maybe four of them for around $3-500 each. and i then have enough bits and pieces to put together a clean, complete car/truck.

this silly business that david has got going is just dumb....... its one thing to have a few friends and have a “build off”, where you throw down some rules, and a budget. then see who comes up with the best thing given the rules. this has NONE of that going for it. its being a tightwad for the sake of being cheap. there is a certain satisfaction knowing that you made something out of nothing, but hanging of the edge of large hill in moab is not the time to think about how you cut a bunch of corners, and threw a bunch of important parts haphhazardly together because you didnt give yourself enough time to do the job right......

its not bad enough to part out, but its bad enough, that it ALL needs a lot of attention, and careful scrutiny before just throwing it back together. if it were me, AND ITS NOT ME........ i would buy another “parts jeep” and build one from two....... you can always put the leftovers in one chassis and sell it further down the road.......

Kinja'd!!! "WiscoProud" (wiscoproud)
03/14/2017 at 15:07, STARS: 2

I’d agree with that too. These things are rare, but not exceedingly so that everyone needs to be rebuilt.

its one thing to save something with sentimentals, like “grandads pride and joy” jeep, but this isnt that......

Even if he miracle crams this thing back together I wouldn’t drive it to Moab.

The last Jeep he did and took to Moab I would have. Not this one.

are we ready to start taking bets/selling squares on where it crumbles to pieces? should we start putting chalk outlines where we think the parts will land?

i have built lots of JUNK over the years, and the last place that i would want to test out my work would be hanging off the side of a large hill. i usually spend about a half dozen or so trips in slightly larger radiuses from home, gradually convincing myself that it is safe.

i hope it fails REAL close to home. you know, so the walk back to the house isnt so far......... you hope for the best for the guy, but really you dont want the guy to get his self hurt, just because he couldnt MAKE the time to put it together right.......

yeah I hope it fails inside the state of Michigan (if he even pulls out of his driveway that is) so he has OPPO’s close by to help him get back home.
