Oppo, as I further challenge myself by learning new instruments, I can’t help but wonder if there are any other opponaut musicians out there. What instrument(s) do you play? What instrument(s) do you own but don’t play? And for kickers, what instrument(s) would you like to learn how to play?

I’ll go first. Between my wife and I, we have enough to start a folk or bluegrass band. We have a few bass guitars (electric and acoustic), a few guitars (electric and acoustic), a tenor guitar, a couple ukuleles, a mandolin, bongos, a dulcimer, a accordion, and a banjo. I can only play the bass, tenor guitar, the ukulele, and banjo; while MrsZtp plays the dulcimer and guitar and is learning the mandolin. I want to learn the accordion but it really is a bit too complex for me currently. Though I’d love to learn any kind of folk instrument, I love the timbre and sound of folk instruments.

That’s quite the collection. I keep this beater here in my office at work. I also have a Tele and a generic bass. At one point in time I could play violin and was taking piano lessons, but that’s pretty long ago now. We have a band at work that jams every Thursday at lunch and random nights after work. Usually I play bass there, but sometimes guitar and I’ll sing now and then.

Drums.

I have 2 drum sets, one of which is actually set up in my house. I haven’t played it for several years. I try to keep skills somewhat sharp by playing along with songs in the car, playing bass drum on the dead pedal with the wrong foot whilst hitting various points on the steering wheel for everything else.

I think a lot about trying to form a band and playing again, remembering the long nights playing awesome music in smoky bars with my friends. Those were some of the best times of my life.

Then I think about treating it like a second 20-hour-a-week job with bad pay, as well as constantly setting up and breaking down, and loading all the band’s equipment in my truck by myself. I really like my life now with a steady job, a significant other, and no musical side project that sucks up all my spare income.

I can’t relate. One of my dreams and bucket list items is to write music and perform, maybe even record it. But between work, church, and family my spare time is eaten up. I am looking to form a band, but haven’t found anyone willing. Honestly, my bass skills have diminished, so a band would keep them sharp. Actually, I play in the church band, and I have been slowly pushing my limits to be a better bassist.

I have a complex love/hate relationship with music. I started in third grade (?) on the violin, but had to give it up when we moved to podunk, USA where they had a band, not an orchestra. I switched to flute.

After a couple of years, I moved up to high school and started marching. I was one of two piccolo players. I started getting bored, so I swapped my flute for an oboe for the concert season and picked up bari sax for jazz band.

I decided band wasn’t my thing, so I left it behind after graduation and don’t play anything for several years. I finally bought a cheap acoustic guitar, followed by a classical and an electric guitar. Then my wife asked for a piano, so we bought a small upright for her. She also has an alto sax in her arsenal.

Despite our efforts (two years of band for each of them), neither of the kids have shown much interest.

Bummer.

The thing with the organ is the mechanics are practically identical to the piano (of course there are some major differences/intricacies as well.) I think the biggest limiting factor is the availability of an organ. “Home” organs suck and you need to be connected to ever play a genuine pipe organ.

During middle and high school, I played trombone. Never felt challenged, but it was fun to play in a group. I dropped the trombone for bass my senior year, and have played it on and off again throughout the years, and if my local church needed a bassist. My wife just fiddled around with guitar. I can read music, MrsZtp can’t. So it’s a requirement for our kids to at least learn how to read music, and hopefully they’ll use that as a jumping off point. My 4 yr old daughter has shown an interest in music, she likes to mimic me and play the ukulele or my first bass.

I think it’s also the type of instrument too, and your influences. I’m the oldest of three, and the only one who can’t sing (sing good at least). They favored musicals while I gravitated towards heavy metal, punk, etc. basically, I sought out music that was different and challenged my conception of how to interpret music. I then learned to play instruments so I could play along. Plus, I find musicals boring because the instrumental parts weren’t very creative (imo).

I consider myself a clarinetist/saxophonist primarily, although I was/am a singer long before I ever touched a wind instrument.

What can I play, proficiently? In order of proficiency: clarinet/bass clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, snare, euphonium, horn, trombone, flute, mallet percussion, electric bass, piano, drum set, oboe, tuba. I really need to learn bassoon.

What do I own? A clarinet, a bass clarinet, three saxes (an alto and two tenors), a trumpet, a trombone, a flute, an electric bass, and a Fender Rhodes (king daddy of all electric pianos).

I’d really like to learn cello; it’s been 13-14 years since my college tech classes. I don’t have any practical, daily application for string instruments, whereas I play clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone probably daily.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll explain it to the best of my ability. Every chord has 3 or more notes in it; usually a major or a minor chord. Power chords, are a neutral middle ground. The root is the main note, like A or B, and the fifth is the fifth note in the chord (a little music theory is needed here, but that’s not important right now).

On a guitar, you have 6 strings, from top to bottom EADGBE. Using the image above, from left to right it makes EADGBD. This is for right handed people, FYI. The black dots with numbers correspond to the fingers on your left hand; 1 is the Pointer, 2 is the middle, 3 is the ring, 4 is the pinky. On the image above, you can see the frets, and where they say to put your fingers. On the top of the chord image, you’ll either see nothing, an O, or a X; O means the string is open (dont press on the string, just play it), nothing there means to strum the string, X means don’t play it.

You’ll noticed a similarity between all 6 chords, they only play three strings each. You’ll also noticed that each chord has a specific form, a base note, another note two frets down the neck and on the next string, and a third above the second string. This ‘form’ can be used to play a power chord anywhere on the E or A string. It sounds complicated, I know, but it’s pretty straightforward. I can’t play guitar, but it can do power chords. You can look at YouTube videos too for power chords. Most bands use power chords, as it’s simple and only three notes.

I took piano lessons as a kid, and played piano for quite a while, but probably haven’t played in 6 or 7 years due to moving out of my parents and not having a piano of my own. Throughout middle/high school I played the clarinet, (which I was really good at), bass clarinet, a little saxophone, and the Bari Sax (my favorite instrument I played), but again, haven’t touched one since high school. I took guitar lessons in high school, and learned the basics, but I started playing less and less in college, and now it’s one of those things that I pick up a couple times a year, fiddle around with it for a week, and get distracted with other projects so it winds up back in the closet. I’ve always loved playing, and really do want to pick it up again, I just need to find the time, and motivation. (Full disclosure, part of me feels self conscious about what my wife would think, because she was never a music person, or in a music family, has the band-geek stereotype in her head, and doesn’t understand how awesome music is and can be. Even though she knows I’ve played all of those things, and loved band she’s never seen me play anything apart from a few times I’ve fiddled with my guitar.)

Yeah, bottom left. My acoustic bass has a non-black strap too. I picked out a folksy looking one for it. All my electrics have black though.

They are expensive, in the $2200 range, but so very worth it. The local GC has a 2015 Fireglo 4003S that I’ve test driven a few times for $1650, but the S isn’t my dream. Also not a HUGE fan of the Fireglo, I’d rather have Midnight Blue.

Oh, I’ll eventually play regardless haha, I’m not worried that she’ll think that I’m weird, only that it’s weird that I started playing because I just, don’t right now, and she’s never seen that part of me.

Played drums in a band, but drums are loud, and I’m not teenager/college-aged anymore where I don’t care about my neighbors.

I can relate to this. I played for many years in bands, until my day job became a career and not just something to pay the bills. Now I’m leery of playing my drums at all due to the fact that they’re located on the top floor of my house and the sound projects quite a ways when I play...enough that I’ll annoy all my neighbors in short order if I play for any length of time.

Good man! Maybe invite her to sing along with your playing? Just have a good time, sing about random things with her. I sing about random things while playing the ukulele to my 6 month son. It’s fun, :)

I am very rusty though....don’t have much time to play anymore. I also played Piano from when I was like....4 until when I was 13 or so. (I am 30 now). I still know how to read music and such, but I can’t remember fingerings, etc at all anymore to just sit down and play something....should really get back into it sometime!

Let’s see, in elementary school I started off with the violin. Then went to the trumpet. After playing that for a few years I switched to baritone in middle school. When I got to high school I took guitar lessons that failed pretty hard. None of them I could really just pick up and play except like two songs I remeber how to play on the guitar.

I really really want to learn piano... so someday here maybe I’ll take lessons or pick up a weighted 88 key keyboard to teach myself the basics.

Wait, what anime are you watching?

But really, I like them. Sort of a obscure instrument nowadays, which is what makes me curious about it.

It has always reminded me of a silly instrument you’d see in an anime.

They are interesting though, but I want to play piano

What’s the difference between alto clef and Greek? Some conductors can read Greek. Come join our awesome club of misidentified instrument. People joke about us a lot but that’s just because they’re jealous. The timbre is decidedly different from a violin and is often used in blues. Going fretted to fretless will be challenging.  This is a fun read.

Kinja'd!!!

I have a cheapo Cort stratocaster type electric guitar, which I sort of know how to play. I never really took any lessons, but just picked it up auto-didactically, so I can get some sounds out of it, and I really notice that I still improve my playing every time I try something new, however I’m not a great guitarist... Maybe if I could just take the time to practise a bit more often.

Thinking of instruments I’d like to learn to play, the piano and for some odd reason the Banjo come to mind (don’t really know why).

It was at first. When I initially got hired, I was hired to be the brass and percussion guy; the head director was the woodwind teacher. So I got used to playing brass a lot. When he left a few years ago, they didn’t replace him, and merely moved me into his position, so now I had to teach both at the same time...THAT was an adventure. It took about a semester to get where I could swap between a brass and a woodwind instrument without having to both physically reset my face and mentally reset my mentality. Now I can do it pretty seamlessly, which is funny, because I don’t have to anymore...last year, they hired a brass assistant director for me. ^_^

Even at the school we lose percussion stuff from one day to the next. It’s broken or misplaced or pocketed.
