On my way to work this morning I had an oh so pleasant surprise. So now I’m trying to figure out what I need and where is it located. I can’t seem to find a diagram of where

Undler Fuel pump I get 2 very different things

standard replacement pump

What i can’t figure out is watching similar how-to videos the high pressure fuel pump for DI engines is on the engine.

Any opponauts have experience with;

1)p228d

2) if its better to change the whole pump, or just the standard replacement pump

3) diagram of where the high pressure fuel pump is? 

3a) any weird special tools?

are you sure there’s not a third part involved? Seems like the fuel pump might be ok, there could (should?) be a pressure regulator inline prior to the fuel lines under the hood that regulates the pressure from the pump to the injectors. If that has failed, the fuel pump can run hog wild with the pressure, and you’d get that error. I guess it could be a pump, but I’m not aware of a fuel pump failing to higher pressure in my life.

I don’t know anything about GM direct injection engines. That being said, the top pump you have pictured is a high pressure pump, the lower one is the in-tank low pressure pump. The problem with that fault is that it doesn’t specify low side or high side.

The HP pump will be located on the engine. They typically use a series of sensors and valves to regulate high side pressure and volume. They don’t typically have a conventional pressure regulator. That makes me think your fault is referring to the low side.

Low pressure systems I’ve seen (on DI engines) typically have a pressure regulator built into the in tank pump assembly or on a low pressure line, usually near the engine. Low pressure lines will usually be made of plastic or rubber and fastened with clamps or quick connects. High pressure lines will be hard lines fastened with nuts, I don’t recommend you disconnect these, but if you have to make sure to do it slowly and after the engine has been off for a while as these systems sometimes retain significant pressure. My guess is that your pressure regulator is integral to the low pressure pump and will require replacement of that whole assembly. But it could just be a bad pressure sensor. I really don’t know.

Thank you. There appear to be 2 sensors, a fuel tank sensor and fuel pressure sensor that I think is on the rail.

Seeing the “fuel pressure regulator 1", I looked up fuel pressure regulator 2 error codes I might be able to separate which is which.

The one on the rail will monitor high side pressure. Some systems are set up so that it’s built in to the rail and can’t be replaced separately from it.

I would probably start here. Like I said, I’ve never had a fuel pump fail and give high pressure, unless there’s a regulator internal to it, which really would make no sense...
