Will drive 1000 kms round trip to look at and probably buy this on Friday. What do I need to know?

If it doesn’t sell until Thursday, the dealer only reserves cars for 24h, which is fair. One owner, perfect service history, no accident damage, fresh service and TÜV inspection upon purchase. If it all checks out as advertised I’m in. So what do I have to look out for? Any common issues with them? How reliable is the active steering?

Buy it! We need that at the europpo meet to compensate for the Twingos, haha.

If it’s as good as it seems to be from the ad, the interior colour seems to be a compromise worth making. It really looks mint. Looking at the ad again makes me notice even more how perfect it really seems to be, it doesn’t even look close to its age.

Yadda, yadda, used BMW, ...insert stereotype here... Anything constructive from the guy who (if memory serves me correctly) bought an FCA product with halogen headlights?

It’s really nice, can’t fault it. I’d expect maintenance costs to be a bit higher than your average Focus etc, but given you’ve mostly looked at german premium cars i assume you’ve made peace with this.

The car looks great for it’s age and mileage, and it’s not an Audi All-Road. Seems like a cool cruiser if it checks out.

I called the dealer today. They got it from the BMW dealership in Berlin where the one single owner!!! had it meticulously serviced!!! so it comes with a pedigree.

I’m pretty sure I’ll drive the Honda to the meet, though. If I sign the papers and put money down on Friday, I’ll get the title to register it sometime during the next week so that I can come back and pay the rest, pick it up, and drive it home the next weekend... Oh, there’s something else going on that weekend. It’s almost physically impossible to pick this up Friday night in Leipzig and then drive to Belgium....

Don’t give me any ideas!!!!!!!!

Well, when you ask people about their dream cars, you will hear Porsche, Fezza, Königsegg a lot. I always wanted a black 5 series wagon, so this is a thing I have to cross off my bucket list. And this one owner car with perfect service history seems like a good bet. If it really starts to bleed me dry I can always trade it in for another used Honda.

There are four bolts at the front of the head that are aluminum. Because of the stress on these bolts (even from just heating up and cooling down at different rates from the block) they will break. It’s about $7 for all four bolts and $400+ in labor.

Just something to watch out for. Open the hood while it’s running and listen for a little “ting-ting-ta-ting.” That would be the broken bolt rattling around in the head.

Oh man, that sounds great. I’m imagining the owner to be a little old man, being very proud of his BMW, and taking very good care of it.

Ah damn, that’ll be too tight indeed. Too bad, but it’s a nice send-off trip for the Honda in that case.

Yeah it’s the best chance to have a reliable one. I know a relative of mine has had a lot of issues with his e60, but it’s a bad example and he does some questionable work on it. It’s likely not reflective of the car’s quality, more the life it’s lived.

It will be bitter-sweet, but I feel like the Honda is telling me that it’s time. Driver’s side rear door wont open from the outside anymore, and now the trunk bought into that trend as well. Combined with the breakdown last November, I think that it is slowly letting go. I could still have everything fixed for price of a full service on a BMW and see how long I can drive it, but I’d rather do it with something I actually like. The Honda was always meant as an in-between car, and I kept it for over 4 years with very little trouble, so that went well, but I just want to move on.

Hast Du ne Idee was sowas kostet?

As soon as it’s yours you need to keep in mind that you shall now:

1- Never use a signal
2- Never park appropriately
3- Assume any lane is yours to enter into wildly, again with no signal.

Generally speaking, you have your own rules of the road.

It’s a nice car. AWD and the 35i engine would make me shy away because of the fuel bills, but in the US, why not? I’m also a sucker for the carbon black with the M-sport kit, shadow line and BMW “Doppelspeiche” wheels. The one I posted also has the “Standheizung” (think of it as a more sophisticated version of remote start) which is rare on the petrol cars, which itself are rare other here. If it had tan leather and wood trim instead of that that plastic stuff that tries to pass as brushed aluminum it would be the holy grail. I don’t even know if they ever built one like that, and waiting for a mint one owner example to be available would be futile.

Back to that 535 xi, I like the wood trim!!!! But it has the small screen which looks somewhat cheap in such a car. Pretty much the equivalent of blank buttons.

Yeah they tend to have electrical issues and engine vibration woes. I knew 3 people who had E60s new and they all had those issues I mentioned. By the way my truck has been perfect

Sadly, no RWD BMW wagons in the US since the E46/E39.

My wife wants to replace her E46 wagon and wants something newer, so that 2008 is now out, though 2010s jump up quite a bit in price.

Isn’t 2010 the last year of the E61s? As you may know, we don’t do model years in Europe, and the date of the first registration marks the age of the car. By mid 2010 they switched to the F11.

I did not know that. You crazy Europeans and logical way of doing things!

Yes, model year 2010 is the last of the E60/61.
