So, if you believe the weather people, we’re supposed to have the first significant snowfall of the year tomorrow. I’d like some opinions on a difference of opinion I am having.

A little bit of background. I have a one car garage, and a two car wide driveway. My wife and I carpool to work, so there’s always one car at home. Usually in the winter we leave the car that we are driving in the garage.

My wife is convinced that we should park the car in the driveway tonight (not garage), because that will mean we have less snow to shovel. I’m of the opinion that this idea is just really won’t work.

The snow doesn’t magically disappear. It’s still there, but now there’s a car to clean off too. You have to clean the car, and then shovel the snow that’s been brushed off the car. I think it’s making a lot more work than there needs to be. With an empty driveway I can just put the shovel on the ground and push. Also, since I’m considerably larger than my wife, it isn’t hard for me to shovel it by just putting some weight into it.

What’s your opinion, Oppo?

stuff the car in the garage. clearing snow off a car is such a pain in the ass in the morning

Garage the car. In the morning, you just have to shovel snow instead of shoveling snow AND cleaning car.

Empty driveway is much easier than cleaning the car off, then moving it, then cleaning the rest of the driveway.

Living in a place where it snows a fair amount, I would much rather be able to just get in my car and go to work in the morning without cleaning snow off it when it’s cold as balls out.

Also yes, it’s more work to clear snow off the car, then shovel that same snow later. Unless you’re one of those terrible people who only clears the windows and leaves the snow on your roof, trunk, and hood.

We’re about to get hit with something like 2 feet of snow where I live. I’ll be cramming 3 cars into my 2 car garage tonight. It helps to drive small cars.

As others have mentioned, easier to have an already clean car in the garage and an empty driveway to shovel versus having to spend 10-20 minutes cleaning off the car and moving it to get the snow out of the driveway.

Hell no. I make my car pretty much spotless. Although I know another easy way of doing that. It’s called parking in the garage.

I would weigh it from the perspective of *not* clearing the snow, so I’m of little help here. From that perspective, though, car in garage = can get a start/is not in a pit in the snow, even leaving aside the clearing the snow off the car step. Of course, that all falls apart if there’s more than six inches.

From the clearing the snow perspective, the only “saved” amount is the area in front of the car. Car in the way of snow clearing more than makes up for that, so car-out-of-way seems better.

Do you expect that you’ll be able to pull your car out of the garage in the morning without any shoveling? If so, I’d put the car I’m driving in the garage. Warmer in the morning and I don’t have to wake up extra early. Also, because it’s warmer, there’s a decent chance it’ll be easier to clean off when I need to leave work in the afternoon.

Laziness prevails.

My wife helps shovel too. I’m very lucky in that regards. She helps with all the grunt work around the house.

Yes, I can shovel triple the amount she can, but she isn’t one to shy away from work.

I can think of about 50 reasons why you’re right and zero reasons why she is. Her suggestion means double work and a cold car.

Of course, if she’s insistent, it might be less painful to just leave the car out.

If you expect to be able to make it out of the driveway in the morning without shoveling, park in the driveway. In the morning, clear just enough to see, pull out of the driveway and clear the rest of the snow off. Boom, less shoveling.

If you expect to have to clear the snow to get out, park in the garage. Cars in the driveway will only make it more awkward.

Oh, I hate shoveling, no doubt. I can see where she was coming from, but it just won’t work. I’ve tried all kinds of things in the past to make shoveling easier, and it generally doesn’t work.

I need a heated driveway.

If it’s going to warm up I don’t bother with the driveway, let it melt..

We park both the car and the truck in it. Shoveling the driveway, then cleaning off the vehicles and shoveling it all again is a pain.

If it is a lot I’ll back both the rigs across and dump the snow on the empty lot on the other side of the street- let the plow get it.

Car in garage: Push shovel along snowy driveway. Done

Car out of garage: Brush snow off of car, probably leave microscratches in the paint. Spend an eternity clearing off all relevant glass of snow and ice. Get into blocks of ice that were once car seats. Push shovel along remainder of snowy driveway.

I hate it, too - but to the extent that I need to do it, I’d rather be shoveling an area that hasn’t been stomped down by my own footprints (from cleaning the car off), and has plenty of room for me to throw the snow on the lawn (ie, no cars around). My usual argument is that if I’m the one who’s going to do it, I’m going to do it my way — of course, the reverse is true if she’s the one doing it.

Much easier to shovel if the car is in the garage. I might have some experience in this since it snows here about 5 months a year. My wife would agree, also having your car dry and a little warm is really nice.

I was being facetious. But I do agree with your point. It’s a lot easier to just throw your weight into your shoulders to clear a couple of straight lines of snow from the garage door to the street than it is to shovel around an awkwardly shaped object, then scrape snow/ice off your vehicle careful not to scratch the paint and whatnot.
