A Jeep Grand Cherokee or a Volkswagen Touareg 3.6?

Kinja'd!!!

I would say they’re both in a similar class: both are luxury-ish SUVs without the luxury badge, both have 3.6 V6's, and both are 2 rows. I know that they’re both considered unreliable, but which would be more unreliable?

Dunno, but I’d rather have the Jeep anyway.

My money’s on the Touareg being less reliable.

Even if the base reliability is about the same, the engine is crammed into that application, VW dealers are known for incompetence, parts availability won’t be as good, and independent shops are fewer and farther between. So, the impact of a breakdown will be higher on the VW.

As an owner of multiple VW’s (past and present) and a Jeep Grand Cherokee, I would take the Jeep 10 times out of 10.

Do you have a current generation Grand Cherokee?

Yes, and I would say that Volkswagen parts are going to be more expensive than Jeep ones.

Yep. 2014 Limited. 3.6L V6. Great vehicle.

The 3.6 jeeps aren’t too bad, and depending on trim it could go either way

FCA is generally more electronic issues than it is mechanical. VW is just whatever feels like failing that day it seems. My money goes to the Jeep being more reliable given it isn’t loaded up with electronic shit to fail.

My father’s got a touareg (with the 3.6) with 50+K miles on it now. He’s had zero issues. Zero.

Honestly it could go either way. The V6 in the Touareg is one of VAGs strongest engines, but obviously parts for the Jeep will be less expensive. Id get the Touareg when compared to the V6 Jeep but that is because of my fanboyism. If it is the HEMI, the GC all the way.

We’ve had a 2014 V6 GC Overland since late 2013. It’s been great. Regular maintenance, a couple of reflash recalls, but no issues.

Glad to hear you like it! My mom isn’t considering one for her next car, so it’s good to hear that real owners like yourself like it.

Yeah, I think the Jeep would be more reliable too. The limited trim is decently equipped but doesn’t have stuff such as the air suspension to break.

I would say that the Jeep would be more reliable. That being said, just need to share this:

Short version: avoid VW like it has small pox! Get a Jeep.

Long version: Every VW owner I’ve known (including myself and the wife) end up with a whole platter of random issues from windows falling into doors, window buttons falling into doors, handles falling off doors, mirrors falling off, heater controls breaking off in the dash, transmissions grenading, engines blowing valves and seals, radiators not making 40,000 km, bearings, bushings, struts, seat controls breaking, HVAC systems giving up on life, sensors dying everywhere and more. Lot of door-based issues...

All of which would not be horrible EXCEPT VAG are dicks about using your warranty. Damn near had to take them to court to deal with our 1.6 turbo Golf which used an Audi drivetrain... which was the transmission and engine problems mentioned above... maybe avoid Audi too. And I love Audi. I’d never own one though. We ended up getting lucky at a third party VW certified shop putting the claims through before the warranty ran out. Which was great because all the VW dealers in town were giving us a pretty solid run around on some blatantly obvious defects.

On the flip side: I owned an 07' Wrangler, which was the brand new model refresh after the TJ’s. I had a “bad” alternator (might have been the mud... who can say). Warrantied. Ripped off all four corner’s ABS lines, warrantied. Even AFTER lifting my jeep a few inches. And they only charged me $40 total to extend all the harnesses to prevent it from happening again. Broke the E-brake, warrantied. Messed up the rzeppa joint from the lift and wheeling. Warrantied. Say what you will about some of FCA’s build quality. But at least my dealer stood by their product. I also blew through shocks and coils at an alarming pace but that was on me and I could swap all four corners in under 2.5 hours by the time I sold it in 2012.
