Regular Cars explains the history of Chrysler and its merger with Mercedes.

“.... with reliability that wasn’t up to the standard of either Chrysler or Mercedes.”

Yea my turd has a permanent CEL and a few things just not working. But I still love the way it looks and it still slides in the snow just lovely. Not that I did that during the commute this morning or anything.

Its still going with 189,000 miles on it. 97,000 of them have been put on by myself. How many times has it been the shop? I’d rather not add ‘em up.

Sometimes you just love a car no matter how objectively crap it is.

But for what it was, nothing ever has, nor ever will, equal the Dodge Caravan. There again: no middle ground.

Jesus. That’s like saying that Hitler’s relations with Europe weren’t up Kaiser Wilhelm’s standards.

Yea I’ve seen that episode and a few others from the series, all pretty good. Ralph is such a damn cool guy. I’ve got to meet him a few times as a student and as a professional, always nice and doesn’t seem full of himself.

Nice. I was very much taken with the first episode of that series, but the others, not so much. My wife and I don’t watch much television, but what we do watch is almost entirely Netflix Original Content. The Chef’s Table is also quite good.

Oh man, the Sebring rental we had a while back... It was a 2010ish model - a full on Mercedes wanna-be in styling, but same old POS Chrysler underneath. It was almost as bad as the Jeep Compass.

Back around then I worked for a delivery company that used Dodge Sprinter vans. They had the complexity of a Mercedes with the poor build quality of a Chrysler. Those transmissions were dying all over the place.

I feel like that statement is a bit dramatic considering it mostly is a Mercedes. The sheetmetal Chrysler changed certainly isn’t unreliable and all the other parts have Benz logo/part number on them.

I went and looked and I liked episodes 1,4 and 5. Didn’t like 8. But thats all I’ve seen so for.

Gotta be honest, cooking shows don’t do it for me.

The Compass comparison makes sense. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_GS_platform

I’ve always hated that Sebring because it tried to take styling cues from the Crossfire but got them all completely wrong. I get slightly triggered when I see one.

“.... with reliability that wasn’t up to the standard of either Chrysler or Mercedes.” That is already a pretty low bar.

And by that I mean mercedes.

I’m one of those psycho weirdos that loves FIAT. Hoping my next car will be a 500 up here in Canada, but that is a ways off yet, so we will see what happens!

Just listened to that whole thing. Even though I watched the whole merger thing unfold and then unravel, this was still interesting. Thanks.

Get an Abarth, the money difference is worth it. Roommate has 30-something-thousand miles on his.

I really can’t imagine my car’s reliability is any worse than an SLK’s.

I would bet money that it isn’t.

I am going to avoid german cars like the plauge unless they are wearing a porsche badge.

Yea I’m avoiding German (parts and badges) for my next car purchase. Since I can’t afford new with a warranty its not worth the trouble.

I’ve heard all the 500s are fairly mechanically sound, but their entertainment systems, etc can be finicky. Would LOVE an Abarth, but there are VERY few on the ground here compared to regular 500s (which are common enough, but not THAT common as there is only one dealership in my entire province!).
