Kinja'd!!!

It’s a 6 speed 128i, says it’s done 160k and they want $7500 for it. Says it is a one owner, could be a good second car if it’s got good service history. I wouldn’t pay anywhere near $7500 for it though. What’s your thoughts on it? VIN is WBAUP73588VF06364.

I’d take it! Being a foolish person, that seems cheap to me, despite the mileage.

That’s what I was thinking. I might call and offer like 4k.

It’s not, probably 2k-ish over priced.

These are seriously that cheap?

A basic 9 year old BMW that’s done 160k, yeah it should be that cheap, like 5k cheap.

Meanwhile a 20-year old Tacoma with 175k miles will still list for $10,000

Do a Carfax and then KBB/True Car. I agree with the others saying offer much less and come up from there if it’s in good condition.

Toyota truck prices don’t make much sense to me.

I think it goes like this:

“5VZ-FE with 200k miles? Just broken in!”

“BMW engine with 150k miles? Just in time for everything to start breaking!”

Wow. I thought the 1-series held their value really well here.

Interesting. I definitely have to keep that in mind when looking for cheap fun cars. Yes, cheap BMW is silly.

One of my friends was shopping for a Tacoma and the used ones were like only a grand less than a new one. Why would you buy a used one when you can spend just a little more and get a brand new one.

Not really, the 1M does but not the lesser trims.

Well personally I would not shop a new one. I’d recommend facelifted second gen or a 4x4 first gen.

Forgive the usual derailment: back to the matter at hand:

$5,000 seems like a nice price to tickle your fancy. Do you have concerns about this vehicle? Will it be a good DD being this long in the tooth?

My wife’s BMW stickered for a bit over $40k. I bought it as a 2 year-old car with under 30k on the clock and a CPO warranty from a dealership for $21k. BMW resale is one of the worst.

I’m a little worried about having to do a lot of maintenance, and that it might have not been cared for well. I want to know what happened to the third brake light. I would want to see a good service history and a new clutch. For 5k, I think it’d be a good DD.

May I play devil’s advocate and ask what other makes you are considering? You seem fairly set on another bimmer.

Nice find!

The flip side of the South GA used Euro market is that when you find nice cars, they’re more likely to be lower mileage, cheaper than ATL, and well cared-for. There just aren’t many of them.

imo it’s key to know accident history; maintenance history, or as near as you can suss it out; and current cosmetic/physical condition. Personally I can’t claim 1-Series maven status but from watching the BMW market I’m guessing $2500-3K if thrashed but never crashed to...Hell, if this one rings the bell in the maintenance, no crash, and condition categories, personally I’d go up to $6500 if it’s one I really wanted.

Happy hunting!!

And it’s worth the same as an e36 (20 years old) with the same milage? I’m not questioning you guys, it’s just bizarre to me since I’ve always heard the 1-series held it value well since they’re very driver-oriented and didn’t sell for long in the US.

I’ve driven a couple Mercedes, a Lexus, those rental cars and nothing does it for me like a BMW. I wanted to try something different but I’ve got a thing for this era of BMW.

Did not weigh in on price before, but I’d say if everything has been replaced and is reasonably fresh (brakes, tires, life left on clutch, no front end work needed) and it hasn’t been hit, I’d go 6K. On the other hand, if it needs 3 grand worth of tires, brakes, and a tuneup, that has to be accounted for .... And to be fair, I didn’t read the description.

Kinja'd!!! "E90M3" (e90m3)
03/12/2017 at 17:21, STARS: 0

Said it had new tires, but they looked cheap, I forget the brand. If it needed 3k of work, I’d probably walk away, unless they wanted to basically give it to me. I’m planning on calling tomorrow and seeing what’s up. You can see it needs a new third brake light, not sure if that’s a sign of other issues.

Don’t know why I know this - third brake light is called CHMSL: center high-mounted stop lamp.

That’s 10x what I payed for my 540i. It’s probably 100 times more reliable than my e39 though. I prefer the size of the 1 series.

That’s about what I was thinking. It said it was a 1 owner car, so hopefully that would mean it’s been taken care of.

I had a 128i before and really liked it, this would be even better because it’s cheap and it’s a stick. I stopped on the off chance it was a stick and that’s the only reason I’m interested in this car.

There is some pollen in the air right now, and who knows how long it’s been sitting out there for. I will say it’s got a bar code on the side, like one you use to get into a fancy neighborhood, so that could be a good sign. I’ll probably call the person tomorrow and see what’s up.
