Completely forgot about DST

It’s a good thing my boss had me scheduled to come to work at the nonexistent 2 AM today. I got up at 1 something, drove the 2 miles to the office and showed up a minute late, punching in at 3:01. It didn’t even register in my brain that the time had changed. That explains why the other dispatcher was in such a hurry to go; I thought we’d have an hour of shooting the shit, but he was ready to roll. He forgot to print out the manifests for the day so he ended up staying late anyway, but at least that wasn’t my fault...

We always had to call our staff on Saturday every spring to remind them that they needed to move their clocks forward, otherwise 4 out of 5 of them would be late. Of those four, half of them used the excuse of “I didn’t know” to just sleep in an extra hour.

I once had a kid who showed up an hour late for work on MONDAY afternoon. They went through all day Sunday, went to school on Monday, and looked me confused while he showed me his watch that was now an hour behind. To be honest, he was usually at least an hour behind most the time by default.

Oddly enough, we never reminded them about the fall time change, and everyone could figure it out.

Funny how nobody ever shows up to work early by accident, isn’t it?

In the 15 years I did that, there were probably only five times someone showed up early. The look on their face was priceless if there were scheduled to show up with the store was open.

They would walk in the door, and wonder where everyone was. One even thought I had gotten a late start and was running late. That was a fun conversation. :)

I remember my first semester in college. One of my classmates was late and tried to blame it on DST. Might have worked in Spring, but it’s not going to fly in Fall...

I left the house one Sat night when I was in high school, and my Mom said to me, “What time will you be home tonight?” I answered as I should have, “Midnight..”

As I opened the door to leave she said, “Make sure it’s the first midnight.”

I was planning on using that excuse, and she was (as usual) one step ahead of me.

I always forget. But then we don’t observe that DST nonsense here.

D’oh! I’m normally in about 6-7 minutes before the top of the hour for the transition from shift to shift, but I figured I had an hour to kill and that being a couple of minutes late wouldn’t matter. I’ll never make that mistake again...

Lucky you. It was even worse in the airline biz after it was moved up since there were several weeks difference between the US and Europe instead of it happening at the same time.
