This again. All cars are manual transmission and for the sake of the game, we’ll assume no major mechanical faults.

DD Toyota

Track Escort (Auto-X counts, right?)

Burn the Jetta, or race Johnny Tran for pinks with it.

Can I burn them all? (Seriously you’ve picked 3 of my least favorite cars ever.) No? OK fine. DD ZX2. I had a friend that had one in college. Was more reliable than you think. Track the Jetta. Burn the Tercel. I have a deep seated hatred of 90's Toyotas from personal and family experience.

Is there a “burn all” option?

No? Crap..

I guess I’d DD the Terlet.

Track the VW.

Nuke the Escort.

DD Tercel - Probably sort of reliable. I wanted to be contrarian and burn this, but I realized it was probably worth driving around. The problem is that I wouldn’t want to depend on it as a daily, so we have #2.

DD & Track ZX2 - Ridiculously reliable cars, for “American”, since the mechanicals are all from a Mazda Protege sitting under a weird/cheap coupe body. The spiritual successor to the Ford Probe and they never retained any value until they hit basic transportation value. Mine was newer, but I sold it for more than I originally bought it for after 8 years and adding 55k more miles. They’re reasonably fun to drive (better with a handful of mods) and they once had a good aftermarket. This is your backup when you’re fixing the Tercel, which you will need. If I could only buy one of these, this is the obvious everything car from this list.

Nuke the VW from orbit. I’m not sure how that pile is still alive.

OK, so the easy one is to track the Escort. 2.0 Zetec, and it’s got the entire early/mid 1990s Mazda FWD suspension aftermarket at its disposal. It’s also the only car here with independent rear.

I’ll DD the Tercel, even if the Tercel is a 4-speed manual . Can be made to handle far better than the Jetta it looks like (despite what looks to me to be a more primitive rear suspension design), the rest of the car’s a Toyota, the engine’s zingier than the 2.sl0 (however, I’m under the impression that the 5E-FE is a bit of an oil burner, whereas the Jetta’s ABA is pretty much bulletproof), and it’s more efficient - 27/35 with the 5-speed, 28/35 with the 4-speed, versus 20/28 for the Jetta (which is, admittedly, a much bigger car).

That means burn the Jetta. Shame, because it’s a Texas car, so it’s probably actually structurally sound, rare for a Mk3 - they make Japanese car rusting look like nothing. Although, it is a 1996, so it doesn’t have the insanely overbuilt version of the ABA - it’s still bulletproof in stock trim, but it’s not as well-suited to forced induction.

Daily Jetta, practical and economical.

Track Tercel, easiest to work on and can survive a beating.

Burn Escort and stay away from the dangerous combusting plastic.
