An E82 1 series could be a good candidate. M3 front suspension is a direct swap, NA bmw reliability, hydraulic steering, very large aftermarket. A 6MT stripper 128i is like an $11k car around me now.
Also, M5 trackday sounds like a lot of fun.

I was looking at a 323is which is bullshit but I’d make it go faster than fuck but I’m hoping to find a cheap 330i as I’m broke (relatively — I’m aware) and it’s got a lot of overlap with the M3. And a solid engine. Super solid.

Have you thought of maybe looking for an E36 instead? Could get a ratty M3 for $5k or less. A nice 318i will be slow as hell but they sell for like $2500 all day.

318 has a load of good parts. It’s a mishmash of cars but I’d hoon the living shit out of one if I can find one cheap enough to not twitch going into a turn.

They sell for stupidly cheap around me. Check out your local CL and see what’s out there. I’m pretty sure we’re on opposite coasts, but even here in DC a clean-ish running example is sub $3k.
