Kinja'd!!!

God I miss it. My neighbor bought it new in 1993 (pic above was from 2012) and was giving it away for free. It was in perfect condition, just needed a tube for the front tire. I rode that thing everywhere. I rode it to school every day (including the rain), around the nearby university campus, and some trails.

Sadly, someone broke into the garage and stole it after 3ish years of owning it. It got replaced by a crappy Schwinn since my parents didn’t want to spend money on a bike “only for it to get stolen.”

:(

edit: It was also my only form of exercise, and I hated the Schwinn so much I quickly gained weight.

A free Bianchi is a pretty sweet deal. Not sure I agree with your parents. A used Trek or Spesh in your frame size from CL would probably be a better use of the same amount of money a Schwinn from Walmart or whoever it is that sells them these days. (The last part makes me sad - I’m just old enough to remember Schwinn being a full-range company that made some pretty nice high-$ bikes before they went bankrupt in the 90's and ended up as Dorel nameplate.)

Some of my best bikes came out of the garbage. Generally the people who threw them out just had little to no idea how to maintain them and they needed just mild adjustments.

Of course it didn’t hurt that my dad just randomly picked up garbage bikes. Eventually you gotta score some good ones, and you have a huge supply of parts to work with :)

I still have my Schwinn Mesa Runner, which I bought in 1985 or so. I ride it fairly regularly, too.

Bikes can be great. The last one I really loved was my flat yellow Schwinn. I bought three bikes at good will, a Schwinn that was flat black, with hand painted vines and flowers on it, an old Huffy 10 speed, and a Sears girl’s stingray copy. I took them apart and made the bike I wanted. The frame is obvious the Schwinn. So was the basket. the seat, rear fender(it did have a rear fender, it had lost it by the time this photo was taken), and grips from the Huffy(the brown grips from the Huffy are also missing). And the handle bars from the Sears girl’s bike. The end result was the coolest bike I ever owned, and I only spent 24 bucks on it. I put many miles on it befor I got a car, and quite a few after that two. It got stolen once, and a few months later I cuaght some kid with it and stole it back. Then 3 years later I left it in my friends garage and his punk ass little brother stole it. I’ll never forgive him.

The saddest thing was when I striped the paint off the frame, I found the original green metal flake, and white two tone. If some one had just left it alone I bet it would still look great. The flat yellow was alright tho, I chose it after seeing a 53 Mercury hot rod in the same color.

That looks cool as hell!

But how did you steal it back? That seems pretty funny haha

I was driving by a bridge that kids usually fished under and it was sitting on the sidewalk. I turned around and parked next to it, to make sure it was mine(of course it was look at it). Then some 12 year old comes up like “hey what are you doing with my bike?” I told him it was mine and it was stolen from me. He denied it, so I told him I’d call the cops if he didn’t walk away, and shockingly he did. I then had to load that big bike into the truck of the 99 Civic sedan I had at the time.

The funniest part was the reason it was stolen was it got a flat tire, and instead of walking it home I left it where I was, and just hide it behind a dumpster. I got a ride to Walmart bought a tube then came back to fix it, and it was gone. So whoever stole it was determined. I guess they thought it was pretty cool. Although it’s really stupid to steal I bike that customs and not even paint it.

Yeah, that whole story is sad as hell. It was from Target and was $300, but felt like $40.

It’s like sitting on a Ducati (it was a modern looking bike), then when you try to start it up the button for the starter ends up snapping.

I’m young enough that my first bike, that wasn’t a hand me down was a POS Walmart Schwinn, I saved for a winter to buy myself a BMX bike to replace my Huffy Rocket, and Roadmaster mountain bike. Then I got this thing(pic off google)

Kinja'd!!!

Man did I think this thing was cool, look at it all red and shiny, the diamond shaped frame seemed so cool. I snapped the 2 piece forks in half in three days. Funny thing is if you go into Walmart right now you’ll see bikes of the exact same quality and design. All the looks none of the substance. And yet they all weight 40lbs for some reason.

Yup, this was the thrid bike I’d had stolen in my life, on was a Trek BMX bike which was pretty rare, and cool, although a lot of the parts had been broken and replaced in typical BMX bike fashion, then I had a Haro trail bike that I left outside at my friend’s house, who didn’t live in a very nice neighborhood, I walked out a few hours later and it was gone, I had literally bought it three days ago.

That bike was the one that taught me how to do maintanence. I abused the hell out of a near 20 year old bike (at the time) and it still looked and worked great

Most of my childhood was spent fixing bikes lol. I loved taking stuff apart p, and I had three older siblings, and mom who looooooooooovoved garage sales, plus I did plenty of garage sailing/dumpster diving on my own. So we had plenty old bikes laying around, so I rode them broke them fixed them, and painted them. Really loving bikes as a kid played a major role in loveping cars as an adult.

I only had two stolen.

The other was a $50 faux-BMX bike I didn’t care much for. At the time my family lived in an apartment complex and my mom was adamant about keeping the bike outside (so it “wouldn’t ruin the carpet”) and as you guessed, someone was desperate enough to take a crappy bike made out of chinesium that probably cost $15 to build and sell.

I loved messing around and making them work right.

Strangely enough, that simple maintenance is also why I haven’t ridden in ages. My cousin borrowed my bike, blew a tire... and poor timing by him, as I’d had a run of bad luck; almost every week I had been patching my tube. I basically said “fuck it, I’m sick of fixing tires” at the time and then that “I’ll fix it the next time I want to ride” becomes “I haven’t ridden in 2 years”.

It’s a pretty shitty thing to have happen. The trek getting stolen ended up being kind of a blessing tho, I couldn’t afford to replace it, so instead I bought a skateboard. Losing that bike brought my to the hobby/sport/obsession that defined my life for a good 5 years.

I there right now, literally the only thing wrong with my bike is that half the zip ties that were holding the milk crate on the rear rack are broken a it’s just kinda dangling there, and yet I didn’t ride it once last year after that happened. I also had a moped so biking kinda seemed pointless. But now I have an 8 year old to go on bike rides with so I’ll need to fix thar basket lol

I just got a cheap 12" bike for my 4 year old boy that somehow weighs as much as my 26" mountain bike.

And that’s the difference between cheap steel and good aluminum

I have a chromoly bike and an aluminum one. I’m pretty sure the kid bike weighs almost as much as the steel one. It’s one of these silly things. He thinks it’s cool and he’s gonna be on training wheels for a while. I’ll worry about getting a real bike when he outgrows this in a few months.

Ah yes dual suspension, what every 4 year old needs.

Also good job getting you kid a bike. I know it seems like such an obvious thing but when my 8 year old nephew moved in with us about 5 months ago, he had never ridin a bike, ever. No one ever even. Tried to teach him.

Yeah if you don’t start early it’s hard. My other kid is 7 and it’s already pulling teeth trying to get her off of training wheels. My little brother didn’t start at all til about 8, got frustrated and gave up, and then had to learn when he moved to NYC in his 20's and needed a way around town. It was apparently pretty painful. Hopefully they take to it so we can go for family rides. I used to love riding with my mom and dad when I was in my teens. My daughter has really taken more of a shine to the Power Wheels though, so maybe ATV’s if I can convince my wife it’s not a death trap.

Yeah Jonah really lacks the muscles that you should have already built up at 8. And he has no sense of balance. But I just keep taking him out on the bike. It’s hard for him. But I just try to be encouraging and remind him it’ll get easier with practice. And I promised him that when he gets the training wheels off we can ride to get icecream at McDonald’s so he’s got some motivation lol.

Nice, I don’t actually remember learning how to ride a bike, or ever having training wheels. Not that it didn’t happen I just don’t remember it. I remember having a tricycle, and then my red Huffy Rocket, maybe I just went straight from 3 wheels to two.
