Kinja'd!!!

Well Oppo I have a fairly decent gun collection, but I haven’t been to the range in months. Lately I have been watching a lot, and I mean A LOT, of the Forgotten Weapons youtube channel. It is great and they guy is very very informative. I just love getting this info that otherwise I would never be able to experience. At least not at this point in my life. It makes me miss going out shooting, but I am kinda bored of shooting at the only decent range in the county.

Oh if you were wondering the guns are: 1 Mosin Nagant 91-30, 1 sporterized Springfield M1903 (my hunting rifle), 1 12 gauge Remington 870, 1 Beretta 92FS 9mm, 2 Arisaka Type 99s, and an old .410 (I think) that needs repairs or made into a display piece.

Kinja'd!!!

Anyway, I particularly liked the Walther WA2000 video. Very cool and makes me realize I really want a long distance military sniper rifle, because why not? I would also like to be able to shoot very far distances because it is fun. The local range goes up to 700 yards and trust me I have to aim very very high on my .30-06 and lob it over there. So eventually I will want a WA2000, but at $35k its a little out of my range. So I am thinking maybe a Dragunov. Anyone on here have one? What are they like?

It’s an insult, short for “ special snowflake ”. Saying that all young liberals think they are special and precious and unique and the world should revolve around them. And they will melt into a puddle when anything goes wrong.

The Dragunov is properly a designated marksman rifle, not a sniper rifle. It’s not as precise as something built specifically to be a sniper rifle like the WA2000 is.

The Dragunov in original layout uses 7.62x54R just like your Mosin. So you can try your 91/30 at 700 yards to get an idea for the bullet ballistics.

My current collection is a 1936 91/30, a 1965 10/22, a 1973 Romanian AKM I put together out of a parts kit, a Swede M96 Mauser, a 1952 H&R .22LR bolt action, a CZ-75 pre-B, and a 1923 Deutsche Werke Ortgies.

My kid and we’re plinking with my moms .22-250. For a small caliber rifle that thing has some balls, exploded bottles of water no problem and accurate! I would use it as a deer rifle if I didn’t already have a .270.

Yeah. I plink away at 300 yards with the irons on my 91/30. The Dragunov is more precise though correct?

Sounds like a lovely collection you’ve got going on there.

I love the Forgotten Weapons channel. I think it’s the same dude on InRange channel as well. Military Arms channel is good as well.

As far as Dragunov goes, they’re pretty expensive as well. You could easily do better with a garden variety .308 or whatever AR15. However you seem to be a Mil Surp sorta guy.

I’ll have to check out that YouTube channel. Always interested in lesser known things.

My collection only consists of a Mossberg 500 Thunder Ranch that I kind of went “tacticool” with (ATI pistol grip, Magpul foregrip, flashlight, reflex sight) and a 1947 Winchester Model 12 that’s been passed down a few generations.

ehhh... shooting standard Mosin food a brand-new Dragunov with scope in properly trained hands will produce about 2.2" groupings at 300 yards. Better than a Mosin, but probably on par or slightly worse than your ‘03. You’d need 7N1 or 7N14 sniper-grade ammo to tighten up the groupings, and good luck with that.

Unless, of course, you got it chambered in .308 or 30-06. But then is it still a true Dragunov?

It’s a nice collection so far. I bought the Mauser sportsterized so I need to get a wood stock and iron sights for it. Ignore the backwards scope on it - I was testing out scope mounting ideas and have since fixed that.

Yes he is the same as InRange. It is where they test from Forgotten Weapons a lot.

Not that I like Mil Surp over others, but I am a huge history nerd and I love that connection with a bit of the past and the reasons for making the guns they did. I have my AR15 I need to build, but I just really like that aspect of a bit of history.

For me a rifle is wood and steel, brass and fire. Plus, it’s how it came from the factory, and that’s the way I’d like to put it back to. Sportsterizing a rifle to me is like ricing a car.

You don’t need a dragunov for long range shooting, comrade. I’ve hit targets at 400 yards with iron sights on my AK. Usually with a hit ratio of 1/16 XD

Aren’t SVDs hard to find because of import bans and whatnot? What about a Mosin? They’re super cheap in Canada.

Also, if you have a hard time finding an SVD within a tighter budget, try a Vepr chambered in 54R (can be found in a multitude of configs, the first probably being my dream gun, not counting machine guns):

I inherited my grandfather’s 1968 Remington 870 Wingmaster. It hasn’t seen much use under my care, but my gunsmith says it’s the cleanest 870 he’s ever worked on. My son has been bugging me about going deer hunting, so I’ve been looking into a rifled barrel for the 870. I wasn’t sure how well it would work until I found several videos of guys hitting targets at 200 yards with slugs in smooth barrels. It looks like a good starting point.

My mom just gave me her 500 that’s dressed up with a pistol grip and extendable stock. She bought it for home defense, then discovered how hard it kicked. After being beat up by it, she decided to get a Ruger 0.40.

03/11/2017 at 11:01, STARS: 0

Sure. I will try to do so next time I go to my storage unit. Again I think it is a .410. It was junk from back in my grandfather’s youth and the stock is almost rotted off. I am not sure what it is anymore. He gave it to me because why not.

Kinja'd!!! "CaptDale - is secretly British" (captdale)
03/11/2017 at 11:03, STARS: 0

Yeah, that is about the area of my 870 which I also got from my grandfather. The older 870s are supposedly much, much nicer than the new ones. So I would say hold onto it. Never heard of anyone going hunting with slugs, but I am sure its done.

03/11/2017 at 12:07, STARS: 1

Yeah, the gunsmith said the older ones were easier to maintain and were less prone to failure due to looser tolerances. His only warning was to avoid steel shot or really high powder charges. There’s a spring in the receiver that can’t handle the additional pressure. It’s riveted to the side of the receiver, so when it breaks, the rivets have to be drilled out, forever altering the appearance of the gun.

If you’re looking into long range shooting, the Ruger RPR is the one to beat in the performance-per-dollar competition. Tikka makes nice rifles as well assuming you don’t need a super adjustable tactical chassis.

I’d also suggest watching C&Rsenal if you’re into highly informative videos on military surplus. Forgotten Weapons’ companion channel - InRangeTv - is great as well.
