I strongly prefer lyrical soloing to the “NOTES AND THINGS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE” crowd, so I like Eric Johnson and Yngwie better than the rest of Club Stupid-Fast.
But... I also require riff, so I don’t usually seek out either. One reason I like Michael Schenker as much as I do, because you get big arena riffs and songbird solos in the same song.

I saw Mr Yngwie F. Malmsteen in a small, local, 500 seat room back in 1992. While he is a fantastic player, I never really cared for his songwriting and his ego.
Never seeing him before, I was surprised to see the singer stage left out of the spotlight, and Yugwie center stage in the only spotlight. His kicks, spins, and showmanship were straight out of “Spinal Tap: The Musical” (if such a thing existed)
He also liked to throw guitar picks out into the crowd all night, and I found this part hilarious. He had a clip of 25-20 picks on his mic stand, and every few songs, a grip would come out to reload it with a new clip. I don’t think he ever dropped one by mistake.
Knowing this, I went to this show with 100 autographed picks in my pocket and threw one at him every time he threw one.
I ran out of my supply half way through the show.
I’m sure most in attendance that night wondered who the hell this “Mike” was as they were looking for souvenirs at the end of the night.

I agree. Fast is impressive, but ends up being kind of boring if that’s all you do. I just listened to

Of all the McMikery I’ve come to love around here, this is right up there with the McMikiest of them. Well played sir. I’m trying to resist the urge to share that, it’s hilarious.
I don’t generally care for hair band glam/arena rock at all, but sometimes... sometimes you just need a dose of this stuff.

I don’t usually go for any big arena rock stuff at all, but for the occasional video to reminisce on the time I grew up in. I’m not a guitarist by any means so far be it for me to critique, but most of that just seems to be guys making it look harder than it is, because as a drummer I can fingertap the shit out of a fretboard really fast and in time, but it doesn’t make it good. So this is a little more interesting because there’s actually something more than speed behind it. Also pirate outfits, and keyboard guy playing on the ground. I mean, why the fuck not?
