I realize this isn’t very well equipped compared to US spec minivans...and it would get creamed on price...and its a VW...but I sure looks cooler than the ones we have and VW sure could use a van that isn’t a a terrible rebadge jobber. If they founds a way to

a. Make it price competitive (get away from the spec platform and onto MQB)

b. Make it content competitive (one USB port in a minivan? pffft)

c. Bring the California to someplace like...California

It would be worth looking at.

$75,000 AUD is ~$56,000 USD...however australia has a high import tax. Figure this is a 45 grand van if sold here.

Hey now, the Routan is a mediocre rebadge jobber.

I did love the T4 Eurovan I drove for awhile.

We’ve talked about the post-Eurovan vans in my VW Van forums for years.

We bitch about them not being made available, we complain about VW “not caring about the modern van owner and abandoning us.”

The thread usually goes dead once someone askes, “How many of you will buy one at $50K if they were imported?”

The VW vans are way overpriced for what they are imo and reliability isn’t that great. I’m saying that as a biased German lol. But they’re everywhere and if you buy a two or three year old California you can’t really go wrong. My teacher is on his fifth or sixth VW bus.

My wife has been driving her dads Routan for a few weeks now while they are out of town. She is decidedly NOT impressed. Especially when it failed to start yesterday.

At that price you are competing with the MB Metris passenger version. It would be nice to have some competition in this in-between size van market.

it was...interesting. I drove one around a little. Light on power, but such a quirky driving experience.

It’s a lot better with the 5-speed; you just wring the tar out of it.

exactly. Its one thing to own a modern VW, its another to pay a huge premium for the privilege of hoping your windows phantom activation is a one time deal.

I see this though as a direct size competitor to US “mini” vans. Does VW not want a van anymore in the US? they did once.

I’d honestly just rather spend $5,000 on a mint astro and $30,000 on mods and $500 on vw badges.

For reals. There is an AWD Safari with a small lift, BFG’s, a roof top tent and awning driving around where I live. Thats good adventure machine.

They seem to have replaced 4x4s for middle class parents around here. Then you get the ‘scene’ ones with massive alloys and bad mods. Usually badly driven in both cases.

In the U.K. these tend to just get bought as regular vans or converted to small campers.

Such as the Ford Galaxy.

They are the regular staples of the ‘minivan’ sector here.

The VW T6 is over priced for the minivan sector.

Well isn’t the T6 bigger than all these? These look decidedly smaller than a T6

03/10/2017 at 14:07, STARS: 0

It’s about half a metre longer and a little taller than the average minivan.

But take the VW range itself.

VW T6 (Caravelle) = £31,560 (plus VAT at 20%) = £37,872 starting price

VW Sharan = £27,300 for the basic S up to £34,360 for the SEL

VW Touran = £22,795 for the basic S up to £28,295 for the R-Line

Most people go for the mid-range Sharan if they were going for a VW.

If you wanted larger you can get a nine seater Ford Transit Custom Tourneo starting at the same price as a VW Sharan.

These were sold for 1 model year in Mexico for about 45K USD. It was such a massive flop 80% of them are still in dealerships with reduced pricing as “Executive Owned” vehicles. I love the idea of one compared to a minivan but it seems no one else does.
