New York state and window tint

Window tint laws in NY have always said no tint on driver’s or passenger’s front windows, but this was a seldom enforced law. Every vehicle I’ve had since 1993 has had limo tint all they way around (except windshield), and I’ve only ever gotten two tickets for it, and both times the tint probably wasn’t the reason I got pulled over...

But our wise governor, working hard at finding new ways to screw the little guy, has now made it part of state inspection. So last night, as I’m peeling the tint off my car in preparation for my appointment tomorrow for my state-required ass-fucking safety inspection, I realized something. Police cars are exempt. Every undercover car in my area has dark tinted windows. Thanks NY state for making it easier to spot cop cars!

that’s not true. You have always been able to have 30% tint up front. actually use to be 35% I think at one time in the past 20 years.

Not only that, but 25% tint up front does the job while it doesn’t make your car UNSAFE TO DRIVE. Putting limo tint on front windows plain stupid.

Kind of shitty that it’s part of inspection but honestly if you hand the guy a $20 they won’t mark it down as having tint or failing inspection. Trust me, people aren’t going to be pulling their tint off for inspections, I guarantee it.

Since the 90s the tint laws have always been 70% VLT for all Windows on normal cars, with no limit on only the back windshield. SUVs, minivans and Taxis are exempt and allow tinting of the rear passenger windows.

Places like New York allow certain people to play by a different set of rules than the common man.

I’m shocked you’ve received two tickets for it, and that they didn’t involve follow up visits to the barracks to confirm it’s gone.

I’m in VT, and that’s the way they do it. Here’s a ticket, show up in 60 days to show us it’s gone or we’re issuing a summons.

I guess there’s less to keep them busy here.

The law reads backwards of how tint is rated. The law is at least 70% of the light must still pass through. So you’re allowed to block 30% of light, not have 30% tint. Tint is rated in how much light it allows through, not how much it blocks. It’s call VLT, or visible light transmission. My limo tint is 5%. It’s basically one step above painting the windows black. 70% tint is barely noticeable. True 30% tint is a nice medium gray, but not legal, as some people I know have found out.

Reminds me of the meme I saw last night, something along the lines of:

“Limo tint: For when you’re ugly and don’t want to ruin the looks of your ride”

Here it’s a fix it ticket in which you need to provide a receipt for the removal of the tint. Any tint shop will write you a receipt for “removal” even if they don’t actually remove it, it’s what my friend does any time he’s gotten a ticket. Also each window is a separate ticket.

Yeah, here you don’t need a receipt (I pulled mine off a freshly purchased NJ car right in my driveway) but they do visually inspect the car.

I wouldn’t recommend encouraging bribery. That’s a felony . Spending 1-4 years on probation is not worth the Jackson.

That’s lame. If the DMV or Police wanted to visually inspect each and every car, the backlog would be in the hundreds of thousands very quickly. Sometimes it’s the perk of being in a huge place like NYC, there’s so much going on and so many people that the govt can’t be bothered to nitpick everyone individually, they’d go insane.

Of all the people that I know that have thrown these inspection places $20-$40 to clear codes to pass inspection no one has ever been to jail or on probation. Not saying it doesn’t happen but in my experience here in the Bronx, it’s not really a thing.

Here’s some insight into the places here in the Bronx people go to: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.8516141,-73.9093772,3a,75y,216.04h,87t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sN4RvD4bj9MenSvZBOyf9EA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

This whole strip of Jerome Ave. is full of places that do inspections all owned by Dominicans and Mexicans (with a few Puerto Ricans thrown in the mix). The community is tight enough that pretty much everyone knows each other. My stepfather is a taxi driver and pretty much knows almost all the people down this strip, this May when we have to get our car inspected (which has tints on the windshield and front windows) he’ll have someone hook it up for us so we pass inspection for sure.

Could be worse. Some places in Indiana(the ones that have officers that care a bit too much) allow for a big X to be put in your tint effectively destroying it.

Tint on the.... windshield? O.o

Why???? Why would you do that?

Also, my car probably should have failed inspection last fall because of two huge across-the-windshield cracks that are definitely in my line of sight. It didn’t.

Inspection dudes here know the roads themselves are fricken road hazards. Even the freeways. Seriously, last time I had a windshield that looked like a road map because it had so many cracks, I got it replaced just before inspection and it was cracked again maybe a month afterwards. So. Many. Rocks.

But sympathy is different than bribery. And “everybody does it” doesn’t mean it’s ok to do.

50% tint on the windshield helps so much with heat from the sun, glare from the sun and HIDs and it’s barely noticeable from inside the vehicle. It’s really a game changer, once I did it to my car I was surprised by how much I like it. I drove my Benz for 3 years with 50% tint all around (with windshield) and never received one ticket and I’ve been pulled over A LOT because brown skin.

Kinja'd!!!

See 50%^

I’m glad our roads aren’t THAT bad to cause cracks or rocks to be thrown about but I can definitely see it happening.

I understand your concern I guess things in the hood are just different. Like look at that street view, almost all those cars have tints and those tints are not going anywhere and those cars will continue to pass inspection no matter what new rules NYS wants to impose. It’s definitely not like some secret hush hush kind of thing, basically anyone at those inspection places will just flat out tell you “Dame $40 y no te preocupes”.

Like I mentioned in another comment, any tint shop will write a receipt up for tint removal to show that DMV if you end up getting a ticket. I’m sure that’s not legal but I’m also sure there aren’t enough resources available for the DMV to investigate that.

The flip side of screening out some of the glare is that, come nighttime, you also screen out what little ambient light there is, too. That might not really matter much in the Bronx, where there’s a ton of artificial lighting, but it does matter in rural (and even suburban) Texas, where the moon and stars are the only things around to aid your headlights. If it’s a moonless night, it’s all the worse.

My car doesn’t have any tint at all, on any of the windows. Sure, it can be annoying during the day, but it comes in VERY handy at night. My parents have a ginormous SUV that’s tinted all the way around (except the windshield), and I always feel like I’m driving a panel van when I’m driving it at night. The visibility out the windows is reduced that much.

Having brown eyes helps , too, though. Bring on the sun! Ya me canse de ser tan güera! :D

The last one I got was a $60 fine. I just paid it rather than remove it. Both times I got ticketed, what I was actually doing wrong was much, much worse. A ticket for tint was just fine with me.

I’ve known vehicle owners and inspectors that have gone to jail for that. It’s not worth it.

You know what, I’ve been spoiled by the street lights here that I’ve never stopped to think about how it must be in the more rural areas of the country. I definitely wouldn’t want tints if I had to drive on roads like that, and a moonless night sounds scary AF! lol

I’m tan year round but yes bring on the sun! It was 62 and sunny yesterday here and now today 30 degrees and snowing, BOO! I remember being light skinned as a kid, I would get so pale in the winter. Then one summer in the Dominican Republic as around 12 years old and I’ve been permanently brown ever since haha.

It’s actually kinda nice driving on country roads. Reflective lane stripes help a lot, too. But it’s nice to be able to see the stars and not the yellowish haze of civilization. And you’d be surprised to see how stark a shadow you cast when the moon is full.

I’m the opposite of you, though. I was super morena when I was little. I have one picture of me where I’m about 4 years old and my skin looks like caramel or leche quemada. But I’ve gotten more güerita as I’ve gotten older. I guess I get that from my mom. She’s REAL güera. My skin darkened to caramel again a few years ago when my work kept me outside a lot (shooting football, baseball and soccer games). Now that I’m mostly office-bound again, you can see my tan lines, heh. I need to get back outside. I have no excuse. It was in the 90s just a couple of weeks ago. Right now it’s 71 degrees and it’s been raining off and on all day.
