Was ready to buy a minty 3rd gen 4Runner yesterday for a good price. ANOTHER rusted out frame. I don’t think 3rd gens will even be on my radar anymore; this isn’t the first and sure won’t be the last one I see like this.

Kinja'd!!!

Boat should be sold soon, and with that extra cash to play with I’ll look at 4th gens, GX470s, and maybe even some cheap LX470s. I’d love a 2nd gen Montero but they don’t exist around me under 200k miles and/or rusted out as well.

You can patch that up, easy!

It ran all along the inside passenger side, about 4ft worth. The driver’s side already had a small patch, booger welds, and more speed holes. It was all pretty thin. Not worth it on something I’m literally about to buy. Different story if it was my truck already and paid for. I told the dude I’d give him $500 because that’s all it was worth to me at that point, he said no and I walked away.

Well now I’m about to go to the parking lot and make sure mine hasn’t rusted since last week.

Where do you live??

25 years old, spotless frame. Portland winters did her good.

Have you looked for 3rd gen Monteros? They’re kinda big and underpowered but very capable. The 2001-2002 Limited has awd and rear LSD, the 2003-2006 switches to an open rear diff and traction control. The XLS has only part-time shift-on-the-fly 4wd.

Yeah, but just because you can doesn’t mean you should . Chances are the rest of it is equally bad.

I do sort of like those. But again, pretty rare by me. The few on CL are beat to hell.

This is the exact reason that has me looking at Xterra Pro-4xs. I Sold 4Runners, I love 4Runners, they are amazing, but the rust issue is something that just can’t be ignored.

For kicks, here are some photos of my fiance’s 3rd gen 4runner after the cats were stolen in NYC:

Exhaust (including cats and back) were less than a year old. Spent most of its life in the salt-ruined NorthEast.

Yeah, that’ll be tough.

I’m putting her through one Pennsylvania winter because I wanted to take her on cross country adventures out and back for my last year of college. I could count the number of other second gens I’ve seen here on one hand. Back in Portland they’re all over the place. During ski season Mt. Hood is crawling with them

Not a lot of those either, but I would like to drive a Pro-4X 6 speed if I see one come up. The Nissan interiors are meh quality but for your money you get a good truck.

They’re reliable - except for the SMOD radiator issue in the automatics. I have a 2005 Pathfinder (same mechanicals) that I bought new, and it’s been dead reliable for 170k. A buddy of mine recently bought an Xterra for his son, and the SMOD just appeared - it’s gonna set him back $3-4K to fix. I’d buy one, but replace the radiator right away - and maybe install a separate trans cooler, if you’re in it for the long haul.

The truck was amazingly clean otherwise. Seems like it was washed and waxed on the reg, just not underneath. Too bad.

I hate seeing stuff like this. There’s an armada of Jeeps just like it in the NY/NJ/CT area.

Hey, that Jeep looks so clean! Paint is still shiny after 15 years!

I live in Madison, WI and tried a couple years ago to find one. There weren’t any locally. I would’ve had to go to Milwaukee or Chicago, which I would’ve done if I hadn’t found something else locally I wanted to buy. For anything like this you’ll probably have to expand your search radius.

My buddy has a beautiful TJ, all Sahara swapped. Spice top, OME lift, 33s on nice wheels, flat fenders, bumpers, 8.8 swap... it’s immaculate. Frame has been patched already and it’s still falling apart under there.

It’s brutal. I did a shock job on a 2001 TJ and it took days... since the floor had to be cut and bolts had to be drilled out.

Same Jeep needs body mount repairs, too. Rest of it looks great although the interior is worn a bit.

I found one (6-speed) in the Waterbury area in the fall, was set to pull the trigger, but after going through my budget again decided to get serious about putting money aside for my kids’ college fund. It was the dark gray, looked nice.

I have a 2015 proforks, interior is identical to my sister’s 2005 X which is kind of laughable. But i’m a messy boy with two huskies so the plastic everything is actually pretty great. Where are you located?

Yeah, sure. I drive around 100 miles a month, so I was looking at it as a stupidly fun truck to take out to the woods. It would get used for what it was built for, but in that, it’s also truly non-essential. My driving habits could easily be supplemented by buying a decent rain jacket for me to ride my bike and I would have 0 need for a car outside of the van we have to ferry the kids around.

If I were driving everyday, totally different story, and different priorities on the shopping list.

Craigslist is a royal pain in the ass when the seller lives 10 minutes away, I can’t imagine dealing with some jagaloon 16 hours away. If I can find something at a dealer, sure, that is an option.

This is true. It can be a chalkenge to get them to supply underbody and frame pics. Even more so with decent lighting.
