Are motorcycle helmets like auto racing helmets where they have an expiration date? I should replace my helmet at some point (it’s a 2005 spec) but I am thinking I should just wait for the 2020 spec helmets.

The manufacturers have an expiration date I believe, but I am not certain. I don’t think I would trust a helmet(for motorcycle riding) more than ten years old. To me, the year of the spec only matters if the sanctioning body limits it to the current plus two prior Snell spec years.

If it is just for autocross, I would use it until they say I can’t.

yes, they have a shelf life of 5 year, less if you use it daily

Interesting. Motorsports helmets are good for 2 Snell specs (Snell updates their specs every 5 years so a helmet is good for up to 10).

you sure? I know some helmets with the previous spec are still produced AFTER the new spec has gone in, and you will be able to find 2 or 3 different snell specs at a time. not necessarily that you are allowed with a 10 year old helm. can you confirm or deny that?

You will still see the older models which don’t meet the newer specs being given the older rating. Currently all the good helmets are Snell 2015 with some of the cheaper options being Snell 2010. Some places will still have old stock of Snell 2005s available. Some series will even allow the older ratings past the 10 year point (Snell 2005 is still good in a lot of places though most are phasing them out at the end of this year). There are no intermediate ratings meaning a helmet made in 2009 expires with the 2005 rating. Most tech inspections just check the rating and the physical condition of the helmet and not the date of manufacture.

I’ve always heard 3-5 years for bike helmets. Although I’m not sure who told me that. I imagine it varies based on the contruction

Very nice. I’m looking at a Bell Pro-Star for my new lid. I’ve had my Arai Vector for 6 years now, time to replace it.
