Kinja'd!!!

You filthy econobox driving degenerate. I know this is car guy pedantry at it’s finest, but I genuinely believe that there’s something wrong with people who do this. They’re either genuinely thoughtless or incredibly stupid. And in some cases, intentionally pissing you off because they’re jealous and/or hate your car (not relevant to my 18 year old boat).

It’s a parking lot. They can park wherever they want.

Their cars might get lonely without some kind of company?

In some cases, so unused to parking by the lines in the lot that they feel like they *have* to position their car relative to other cars. The third option to thoughtless/stupid and evil is “insane”.

This is the automotive equivalent of taking the adjacent urinal when all the others are empty.

On a totally unrelated note, y u not back in?

when I walk into a bathroom with one dude in it, I don’t use the urinal right next to him. come on CB! don’t act like this isn’t a classic car guy gripe. I’m just amazed/annoyed like most of us are in this situation, look at how much space there was and how far from the building I am lol.

I think the urinal thing is different.

Some people like parking in the same spot, like I do at work. Even if a whole part of the lot is empty, I’ll park beside someone if they’re by where I usually park. Maybe a similar thing here.

hahaha I was JUST typing that to someone when you wrote it, spot on. And there is actually logic there - my grille is the hardest part on the car to replace (JDM part) and the rear bumper/trunk are already ruined. So I protect the front.

See my response to Noah. They might just regularly park in that area and don’t care.

Also this reminds me of something I read once. It was a German biography. At one point the author felt the need to point out the difference between Prussians and Bavarians:

When I worked at Hughes Aircraft there were a bunch of us with nice German cars. We always drove to the top level of the garage and parked with at least one space between cars. I don’t know who drove those other vehicles but there was an air of mutual respect. We always knew when there was an interloper in our midst as that asshole would park right next to one of the regulars. No. Just no. Get out.

Hey, they parked relatively well for this lowest common denominator driving society, be happy! Around here it would have been parked with front wheels cranked and on the line.

you both have good points.
I can’t decide which point is better. I like MY spot. But I also don’t want people parking next to me in otherwise empty parking lot.

Yeah. I don’t want people parking next to me in an empty parking lot. My spot be damned. I don’t care that much about it.

It’s fine if it’s same car, or same something - race car, off road car etc. but if it’s a fucking wreck of a car, don’t have your car breathe on my car. Your car is a fucking mush. Put a towel over it’s roof. Put it in the bathroom.

Fair enough. Though it’s still hard for me to wrap my head around because it’s just not something I’d want to do.

For me it depends where I am. At work, where I know everyone and their preferred spots, I’ll just go for the same spot every time because otherwise you’re throwing someone else out of their rythm too. Besides it’s almost instinct when you go there every day and you barely notice the other cars. But anywhere else, even if I go there every day and have a preferred spot, with that much room I’d leave at LEAST one space.

I just hate backing out. Seriously. I can back in quickly and without incident, backing out I’ll probably take 2 or 3 (or 4) tries at getting out unless it’s a very roomy lot.

Yep we have the same exact club at the back end of the parking lot at work, spaced out evenly just like that. It’s fun, I like the unspoken agreement and other enthusiast cars join us in the summer. They’re all worth wayyyy more than my car though lol.

Wait, you’re surprised that they’re very bad at the thing they’re bad at? All joking aside, some mix of not caring to line up by the lines or being unable to, wedded to a pathological need to group cars together, et voila.

It’s been great, a hidden gem IMO. I’ve only had to replace wear items so far - most of which are Nissan Pathfinder parts - and it’s been 1.5 years (fingers crossed). My friends argue over the back seat on road trips, it’s like riding a cloud on the highway, and it makes a great noise. The Bose speakers + sub still bump and it’s quick under 70 MPH thanks to short gears. Also I have only seen 2 others since I bought it. I did an Oppo review a while ago if you’re interested:

Alternate hypothesis — it’s a car guy in his beater because rainy/misty; he sees what you did there; parks there to protect you from the other-guy’s-driver’s-door hazard.

Yeah, right.

It’s understandable why somebody would be a bit pissed off by this move. Just trying to find an explanation that involved rational behavior on the dude’s part.

Somebody once wrote a prioritization hierarchy about choosing parking spaces when none of the choices is ideal, maybe you’ve seen it? A couple things that stuck in the mind are that it’s better to park next to someone’s passenger side cuz not that many people have passengers; and if you have to be exposed to a driver’s side, it’s better for you to park next to an already-parked car cuz you can control the distance between your cars. Actually a long, elaborate article but made perfect sense.

Kind regards,

Taz

I think it’s usually pure thoughtlessness. These people just don’t care - about giving themselves more room to get out, not giving others door dings, protecting their own cars, all of it.
