How did this ever seem like a good freaking idea?

My wife’s internet hobby is looking at houses for sale. Tonight she found this ... gem. Take a good, long, hard look at this monstrosity.

Kinja'd!!!

She doubted herself, so she showed it to me to confirm what she was seeing.

Yep. Some dipshit decided it was a great damn idea to put the washer and dryer in the crawl space. How does one get to the point in life, where this seems like the solution to your problem? The funny thing is, the rest of the house seemed perfectly nice. However, everything gets called into question when you have to crawl up and back to do the laundry. What other evil must lie beneath?

That probably doesn’t meet code... at all.

If you have small children you can train them to do the laundry.

The fake plant is a nice touch tho makes the place feel cozy.

Also house shopping is the worst thing I’ve ever experienced

Well, I’ve seen many, many weird ass stuff in my years appraising homes, and I’ve never seen, to my recollection, a washer/dryer in a space like that. It looks like it is off the basement area, and may not be too bad for access, but still very odd and hard to get to.

When I first saw the photo I was thinking, “They’re huge! That’s awesome. I could do a months worth of laundry at one time.”

I once found an upper-middle class apartment that had an afresco on the ceiling of the dining room.

Thought the same thing. Then saw the low subfloor ceiling. I’m like, “Well, then.”

Maybe the house is currently inhabited by dwarves?

Look at the lower left corner. I think I see the side of a wall there. Are these machines on some kind of raised dais?

That’s the wall of the crawl space, where it transitions into the full basement.

Yeah, I enjoyed that too.

Totally agree about house shopping. I’m glad we’re not actually doing that, she just likes looking online. Kinda like our Craigslist addictions around here.

Yeah, that’s exactly what’s going on. I’ve seen a lot of weird stuff too, but this tops it all.

I’ve been doing a bit of both, but my wife loooks at enough houses online that every time I find one she’s like, “oh yeah I’ve seen that one, I fpdont like the kitchen and it only has one bathroom.” And I’m like “but babe it has 10 acres and a huuuge garage!,

We looked at a house today that looked great from a farm location wasn’t great but it had a big fenced in Garage Neighbors were far away, 3 bedroom, 2 bath, attached garage. And under 80,000 dollars. We got there and ver single floor was slanted. The foundation was a mess, and of coarse there was no basement, trying to fix a foundation with only 2 feet between slab, and floor? No thanks.

Haha! We did a drive by on one that had a six car garage a couple months ago. It was unoccupied and a pipe had burst. It was pretty ruined.

Ah. Well, it’s still weird. I guess sitting on the “floor” wouldn’t be so bad IF the dryer had been the kind with a front control panel.

In that case this could actually work well if they just moved them to face out to the full height area. As is, it’s just bizarre.

Yeah, I bet. My father-in-laws water heater was only accessible if you climb over some pipes. We cut an access panel in from the basement bathroom.

At least it’s not a top-loading washer. They need to put down a piece of carpet padding to kneel upon. Honestly? It’s not the most convenient, but it gets the job done and saves other spaces for other purposes. (I wouldn’t do that...)

This is the frickin truth. We just sold our house (way faster than expected) and have been scrambling to find a new place. One thing that I have discovered that is an almost universal truth is that if a house seems to good to be true or has been sitting on the market for a long time... there’s definitely a reason why. Also we’ve found that with most of the houses that have poor quality photos there’s usually a reason why, and those reasons usually become extremely apparent once you see it in person.
