Kinja'd!!!

Seriously, is this the best they can do? They’re advertising a car with a rich history of performance heritage on Jalopnik with the tag line “Your safety is our priority”? What the heck are they thinking?

Also, the Civic is apparently now known mostly for safety. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

Honda hasn’t made anything that I have been remotely interested in for close to a decade. They have made it pretty clear year after increasingly bland year that I am not their target consumer.

This is sadly true for most, if not all of us car enthusiasts.

“Your safety is our priority” may be marketing and PR speak for “Sorry about the Takata airbags that grenaded in your faces”.

Yup, the only new Honda product I really like is the Fit. I like that the current gen is 100lbs lighter and more powerful than the previous(the my wife owns), I like that it has lots of useable cargo space.

Buuuuuut they still refuse to give it a performance model, even though it has a great chassis, and they have engines to put in it. Heck even the base model 165hp Civic egine(or whatever it is now) would make the Fit lots of fun. It’s kinda fun with 115hp.

Yeah, to me it is bland. You know which type Rs I was interested in? The ones produced over a decade ago. I guess you can be happy there is less competition for you to get one.

I have a new civic (2.0 NA with 6speed) and safety was a top two reason for getting it. But you know what? It’s a fun car, in the drive-a-slow-car-fast sort of way. Engine revs like a Honda should, handles well enough for the speed it does, gets great gas mileage. It’s a good car. Drove it back to back with a Mazda 3 and it was a toss up about which drove better.

I get what you mean about Honda’s blandness in general. It’s not like in the 80s and 90s where even your run of the mill commodity Honda still had some inherent fun-ness in it. They were light on their feet, and had great steering, shifters, and visibility.

As for the current vs. old Type-R models, the old ones were, to me, “greater than the sum of their parts” type upgrades. And in spite of the wings and R decals, overall kinda subtle. I say this as a former Honda fanboy and Integra GSR owner.

Nowadays most regular Hondas lack that in-built fun, but the new CTR is far wackier than the old ones ever were. Whether it’s more or less desirable, that’s another question.

(And no, I’m not in the market for one either.)
