Kinja'd!!!

But today I finally got right behind it in stop and go traffic. The car’s shockingly poor condition has always intrigued me. I wonder what the story is here? It’s missing an exhaust tip and big patches of the bumper are down to bare plastic. The body is rotting in the usual New England spots, and the front end of the poor thing is wrapped in a mostly disintegrated car bra that looks like it’s as old as the NSX itself.

It’s a shame nobody’s taking good care of this old girl. By now, it’s probably unsalvageable unless you can do your own body work. I’ve seen this guy driving his elderly nineties supercar to work in the snow.

Speaking of the driver, today was the first time I got a really good look at him. He was a pudgy middle aged dad type, with longer salt and pepper hair combed into a neat side part. This morning was bright and clear, which called for black plastic CVS sunglasses with croakies. He gripped the wheel at 10 and 2.

How did this happen? I’ll never know so I had to make up a story. I bet he’s only the second owner. Over fifteen years ago, some combination of fortunate and unfortunate circumstances led him to buy the car used when it was still a status symbol, and then become stuck with it as his only vehicle for at least a decade. It’s an automatic, hence the year round commuting. And since the car is a Honda, he just changes the oil and it keeps going.

Original owner, original hairstyle, original sunglasses, original Croakies. Everything old is new again.

Sad it’s come to this, but his first mistake was buying an automatic.

that’s why I think it’s in this condition in the first place. the original owner would have cared for it, but this dude isn’t an enthusiast so he bought the a/t and let it fall apart

I think I’ve seen this car as well. At least the guy knows what he likes to drive, even if he can’t keep it in immaculate condition! Nobody drives a car like that unless they really want to...

It’s possible as well that he straddles the line between enthusiast and poser, got dealt a bad hand along the way, and hasn’t recovered mentally/emotionally.

He could probably drop $3-5 grand to fix it up/paint it then flip it for $20-30K.

that’s a good point - another theory is that he’s a deeply eccentric enthusiast who loves old cars and this is his “modern” commuter/gag car

Yeah it’s hard to see a case for keeping the car on the road as a commuter, even a quick clean and a craigslist post would net him enough cash for something with lower running costs.

So let me get this straight. A guy buys the ultimate ‘everyday’ super car. Doesn’t leave it in a garage 360 days a year. Doesn’t wipe it with a diaper after giving it a fresh coat of wax every weekend.

He drives it, a lot, because it actually is an everyday supercar. Good for him.

Yet he still gets beat up by most of the comments? Wow, tough crowd.

(Just realized someone said it’s an automatic, but I stand by my comment)

From the MyCarfax app, you can search based off license plate and get some history.

As of 10/12/16 it passed a safety inspection at 269,520 miles.

Records go back to 11/27/99 at Sunnyside Acura and go between there and Acura of Peabody ever since. So current owner appears to have had it since then.

That’s INSANE! Nearly 300k. I was hoping someone would have that app and you delivered like a boss.

I always forget that it’s possible and wouldn’t have remembered but since it was an NSX I remembered Doug did the same thing recently.

The car is being driven hard and used daily. It’s still kicking with that many miles so some care has to have been taken. I think this is awesome; more people should drive their cars into the ground and enjoy the descent.

Makes me wonder what the highest mileage NSX out there is.
