I’m currently on a quest to use every non-reserved parking spot in my office’s parking lot this year. It’s going pretty well, except for the getting to work @ 6:30 in order to claim the spot I want thing.

There are 167 unreserved spots. My office is a multistory complex, but it’s in a suburb. It shouldn’t be that difficult to do, but to make sure it’s not a cakewalk, I limited myself to only counting the spots I get in the morning.

At lunchtime, a lot of the spots are vacated. It would be really easy to knock 2 spots out in one day, but that doesn’t achieve the desired effect. The whole point is to deny everyone in the building (except for the reserved and handicapped spots) of their preferred parking place at least once.

And yes, I do have a map. I made an Excel spreadsheet showing which spots I’ve parked in already. There are people in my department who are bizarrely interested in my quest and want to observe my progress, so I send a weekly update email out with my map updates attached.

There are a lot of people in my building who have a strange attachment to their parking spots. These are not parking spots that are reserved for anyone, and they’re not handicapped spots. These are just publicly-available spots.

We have people in this building who will go out to their car, start it up, and move it closer to the door at lunch, then shut it off and walk back inside, as if proximity to the door was tied to their importance to the company.

We have people who choose one parking spot in a far corner, and insist they always park there so no one takes their spot.

It is my sworn duty, to no one but myself, to irritate all these people equally this year. I hope to do it again next year, as well.

FWIW, I have a (strange?) attachment to my parking spot. I had my preferred one (with backup #1, 2 & 3) in my old garage, and just moved to my new garage where I’ve found a primo spot that I hope no one else decides to make theirs. See my recent post. =)

The people moving their cars down a few spaces at lunch is crazy! I’m much more of the far corner guy, in a spot where door dings are very unlikely or impossible.

If you stole my spot just one time per year, it wouldn’t bother me! Best of luck in your mission.

You must have been that guy in every college class that broke the unspoken but socially accepted assigned seat rule. Seats are flexible the first 2-3 classes, then everyone sits in the same spot.

I remember that guy. Honestly, I never was that guy then.

I’ve been working in this building for 13 years, and it took this long to finally get to this point. I’m not actually accomplishing anything here, and I’m aware of it. It’s really just for my own gratification.

That spot is sweet, and I get it.

There is a similar spot in our lot, right on a corner, but with a driveway on one side and a walkway on the other.

Kinja'd!!!

The guy who usually parks there has a massive F450 crew cab dually, kitted out with rims, knobby tires, lift, brush bar, winch, etc... The truck doesn’t even fully fit into the spot, and blocks the visibility of anyone left-bound in the picture. He’s even blocked semis who attempted to pull around the building to the loading dock. Lately, my boss has been taking his spot out of spite, but I did manage to sneak in there once last month.

Wow...thanks for asking!

I’ve got exactly 70 of the 165 spots left to park in. I’m in the middle of the most difficult part right now. Our lot has around 30 spots across the back, and it’s really hard to tell which one I need to park in when I arrive. I keep going back to my map after I get to my desk and realizing that I parked in a spot I’d already hit before.

Kinja'd!!!

Edit: Oh, yes...I just reread my earlier comment. I realized that there were 2 reserved spots that I hadn’t accounted for previously.

Kinja'd!!!

My latest update, in case you were interested.

The long journey across the back of the lot (the very top parking spots) was especially difficult, as it was hard to remember which spots I needed to take. I was oddly satisfied with that after just over 5 weeks...

I also irritated some of the folks in payroll when I took their spots. Apparently they complained to the building maintenance guy and requested that he reserve their spots from now on. He thought it was funny and disregarded it.

Hahaha! Wake up early and get that yellow spot!

Are you not going to try to park in the reserved spots? Maybe a solution would be to park there for 20 minutes over a lunch break while the normal occupant is out.

How many of your co-workers know what you’re up to?

I think I’ve told 10 or so people. I’m guessing more people have heard about it though.

The reserved spots are the various VP spots, the controller, and a couple of spots held for handicapped people (we don’t actually have handicapped parking spots). Some of the VPs would see the humor in it and probably let me park in their spots if I asked, others wouldn’t. I’m not going to mess around with the reserved-for-handicapped spots either for obvious reasons.

The building maintenance guy did reserve his own spot though. His is the far-away red one. I know he’d let me have his, especially as I think he’s on vacation this week.

I was going to say, “Some people just want to watch the world burn”...

Then again, stealing someone’s parking spot for a day isn’t really burning the world. Maybe just mussing up it’s hair a little.

I admit, I have a preferred spot. It sits between two concrete columns which creates more space on either side for opening doors. Fewer door dings! Yay!

My company is back to blocking picture posts, so follow this link to see my wife’s Explorer squeezed into my favorite spot.

http://oppositelock.kinja.com/hour-rule-thats-not-how-this-works-edition-1796873249

All of the columns flanking this spot are marked with a variety of paint streaks, all transfers from some poor sap’s fender.

That’s a great spot! I don’t blame you for grabbing it at all!

I don’t blame anyone for getting a good parking spot. They’ve chosen wisely...and they also know other people would want it too.

This spot is somewhat exclusive. The proximity of the columns and the narrow aisles make it challenging to get into, especially later in the day. There’s only one other guy that I know prefers that spot, but he shows up an hour after I do. :)
