Kinja'd!!!

So these have been “selling” for four years now and the 2014 base models are just now barely listing at 50% of their original MSRP within 500 miles of me. But it’s the pricings on the 3-motor performance hybrid, 29/30 mpg, SH-AWD, and probably the second most powerful Honda consumer car ever made that I’m wondering about. I’m seeing brand spanking new 2016 AND 2017 model year Sport Hybrids listing with $0-$4,000 off MSRP! We are talking models around 18 months old on the lot with no incentives!!

You would think an extremely low volume oversized premium flagship sedan that no one remembers was ever in production let alone STILL being made would depreciate like...well a low volume premium flagship sedan! What in the world is going on here?!

I was hoping this would be my future all-weather fuel sipping beater. I guess the Q50 Hybrid AWD or Q70 Hybrid (I don’t remember an AWD though) might have to do. But that Acura seems like something we will be writing about in five to ten years as a killer, reliable, efficient, amenity-filled winter limo for under $20,000...if it would just depreciate like a freaking sedan instead of a Wrangler!

Easy to convince 2nd hand buyers that an Acura won’t let them down, because they probably won’t.

Sales are so low, they don’t even keep up with the tiny amount of used demand. This is one of the slowest selling cars on the market, there’s just not a lot of new demand for a 3:2 scale Accord at 2:1 the price, when so many other options at the same price point are flashier. Also, asking price isn’t transaction price. Something is up if a car is sitting on a lot for 18 months, either a stubborn dealer or manufacturer subsidies. Just wait a few years, or buy the prior RL, which has depreciated.

Why do you need the fancy-pants top of the line edition? Like you said the base models are very cheap. FWD is still pretty good in snow, and it’ll be a lot less complicated when it breaks.

Depreciation in Mexico is extremely weird.

Porsches do NOT depreciate. As in, there is a 2003 Boxster for sale locally and they are asking $20k. Maseratis can be pretty much used for 5 years and sold for a couple hundreds from what it cost you. Acuras, Hondas and Toyotas though loose their value instantly except for the Tacoma. God damn Tacoma is steady as a rock.

Is there anything wrong with these cars besides the price ? Because that seems like a great used car deal

Honda & Acura generally have some of the highest resale value on the used market and even if a particular model doesn’t sell much, its used value is buoyed by the overall high resale value for the brand.

Sure the RLX doesn’t sell much when new but the dealers don’t mind sitting on them because they’re pushing plenty of TLX, RDX & MDX volume that it’s no big deal if the few RLXs sit on the lot for an extended period of time.

Higher-volume luxury cars depreciate in part because the used market has a steady supply of them coming off lease. You get the off-lease CPO ones at dealers and then they come back into the market after the second owner.

When an RLX comes off lease, maybe it sits around for a while, but used cars generall people are more inclined to pick among the inventory sitting there rather than search for specific stuff. So a customer shows up to the Acura dealer, “what’s the CPO sedans?” and the RLX is in there among the TLs, TLXs etc and the price isn’t that much more, and it’s roomier, so hey why not?

But again, the dealers are churning and burning through the volume sellers so it’s no big deal to sit on a couple vehicles that hang around longer.

It was supposed to be marketed alongside the NSX but since the car was late Acura missed all the marketing for the RLX. The only issue with the car is not being on anyone’s radar. No ZF 9-speed so no complaints about the transmission either!

Almost bought one for my mom last year!

Wow I am really considering this car sometimes in the next year or two. Because I know I don’t want to keep the Passat forever but I am moving in a week so I don’t have the extra funds until later this year
