Kinja'd!!!

It has a 305 in it. From 1985. Why would someone go through the trouble of swapping the engine, but use a 305 from 1985. I don’t imagine that would make more than 140hp, unless he’s done things to it that aren’t mentioned. Still, it’s a really cool car.

Why? Probably because it was dirt cheap in some junk yard in 1989. Or the person who grabbed it didn’t realize it wasn’t a 350.

Probably a matter of convince? Like the old motor died and they had the 305 on hand? Either way for 4k thats not a bad starter. 305 is a sbc, cant be to hard to pop it out and swap in a 350 or a 400 or some stroker in between. Not enough classic sedans from that Era have been given love. I’d give this a home for 3k and a swap lined up.

Because it was there and better than the original and was probably cheap. If you were going to go after it before, don’t let that stop you. Give it a good home.

Buck the trend. Put a 302 Windsor in it!

This. Sounds like they wanted to do a 350 swap but just had a cheap 305 around instead.

I can’t stand this. That means they either swapped transmissions or got one of those awful adapter plates. It’s possible they don’t know what they are talking about and put an Olds 307 in there but thought they have a 305? Those are terrible engine pics. It doesn’t look SBC-ish, although the distributor is in the rear. Not enough detail to know though - I can only imagine that something’s being hidden with pics so intentionally vague.

Exactly - that 305 probably was replacing a 307 or 350, so I’m sure it was easy and convenient. As would your suggestions be, too. Hopefully there’s a TH350 backing that up, and not something more recent and weaker.

It’s a bit more than I want to spend, and it wouldn’t fit in my shed....I still want it, but I don’t know if I’d be the best home

Weird that it’s sold as a Pontiac. We have one Canadian made coupe in Finland that is an Acadian Beaumont and it’s a ‘68 or ‘69, but I don’t remember which.

First pic w/ flash shows a decidedly chevy exhaust manifold.

I don’t know anything about CanadaPonchos other than what I read on wikipedia, but is there a difference between the 305 and an ordinary 350/etc.? These being a Chevelle were offered with SBC options.

Yeah. I’d love to get it anyways, but I couldn’t street park that. I need a reasonable garage before I get something big, old, and in very good shape

Canada had Acadians earlier in the 60s, and then apparently Beaumont was it’s own marque for a bit, but it had a version of the Pontiac logo on it.

Ok. Maybe I need to find our acadian again and see what the logo actually looks like.

I’m sure the 305 was either free or close to it. I’m sure thats how the original 283 in my 65 Malibu got replaced with a 305. Yet it still had the powerglide!

In the 60's and early 70's any Pontiac would have come with a Pontiac motor, Chevy used a different bellhousing shape than the rest of GM, hence the ‘BOP’ transmissions with the bellhousing shape for Buick Olds Pontiac and Cadillac engines. Pontiac, Buick, Olds and Chevy all made their own small and big block engines (Pontiac happened to use the same block for their small and large displacement motors, everyone else had two different blocks). So this ‘69 Pontiac should have come with a Pontiac motor originally, replacing the engine with an sbc means it has a completely different block and accessory brackets. It’s not a huge deal in the long run, but I’ve seen issues with transmission adapter plates not being well installed causing issues. You have to be very careful about adding an equal amount of space to the torque converter and whatever spacers/washers you use for that don’t create a balance problem etc.

I know BOP patterns being different- HOWEVER - this is a Canuckistan for-pretend Pontiac. It’s a Pontiac dash and special trim on Chevelle steel, with Chevelle running gear. They had previously pulled this crap with Canadian Pontiacs getting a Chevy six instead of a Pontiac one, in the fifties.

Hmm, okay you are right. Sometimes they did swap engines due to supply issues and such. But I’d be surprised to see an sbc in a ‘69 Pontiac out of the box. I mean, each mfr had an A Body car, for Buick it was the Skylark/Special and for Olds it was the Cutlass. They are not just ‘Chevelles’ although they do share a lot of underpinnings. But I’m not familiar with the Canuck models - if it’s literally a rebadged Chevelle, then it’s entirely possible it had an sbc to begin with.

Canuck model A-body in this case: Literally a rebadged Chevelle with Chevelle sheet metal and drive train, but a GTO dash, because of reasons. Offered with Chevy sixes or a 283 through 396. They even offered an equivalent of the Chevelle SS.

Wow. Okay, I suppose swapping in a 305 is no big deal at that point. The 1986 305 probably made as much power as a ‘69 350 anyway!
