I was pretty skeptical when I first moved here, and the long commute on the awful freeway certainly doesn’t help, but every once in awhile the beauty of the area reveals itself.

As a former long time resident, it really is beautiful with the best weather in the world. With that said you have to make a lot of sacrifices to live there, unless you’re wealthy.

Yea I’m living on the Berkeley/emeryville/Oakland border (actually just right across the freeway from the marina) and sharing a one bedroom with my gf in a neighborhood that maybe isn’t the best, but the rent is just right. I have friends that live in the city and I don’t know how they can afford it.

Congrats! I’m sure you will work your way up!

I lived in Berkeley with my gf (now wife) for 3 years in a 600 SF 1br. Now we pay 33% more rent for a house that’s 1200 SF + garage in San Jose. Of course, there is less to do in SJ than in Berkeley, but I was never really into nightlife. I just like the Bay Area because of the people and the weather, and the “civilization” part doesn’t do much for me.

I’m in the City. It’s annoying, it’s difficult, it’s expensive, and it’s the best place I’ve ever lived and I’ll never permanently leave.

And tons of great driving right around too.

Hwy 1 up North, hwy 35 (from 92 to 17) to the South, and a whole bunch of restaurants and stuff to do all over and in between (Stinson, Sausalito, SF, Pescadero, Santa Cruz).

In east bay you have hwy 130 (from 680 to 5) and Mines rd. I’ve explored a bit around A. Chabot Regional Park with Redwood Rd and Cull Canyon Rd. Tons of fun in any car (once whipped around those roads in my X5).

I was on the Peninsula. Really beautiful, but every time I look at those housing prices I poop a brick.
