We all know Automakers will use brands such as Recaro, Brembo, ZF, Michelin, Pirelli, and every audio provider to upsell their own products, but what about the other way around? Would you buy an appliance that utilized automotive branding? Maybe a new cellphone brand that uses Rimac-sourced batteries? RUF or Icon designed watches? Tesla wall chargers and froyo machines?

I’m just farting around looking at some of the Gorenje stuff as well as the things from Daewoo (which is as complicated as Hyundai when it comes to giant conglomerates being broken up into independent entities).

Car branding on none car related items is a huge turn off. Mostly because every one that’s ever come has been shit.

yeah, only if the brand actually gave the item quality.

If it’s like the Lamborghini or Ferrari laptops of yore then it can get fucked.

Some of these devices are quite nice to look at. But you need a quality item behind the brand as well, and without a huge markup.

I would be interested to see what an Icon or Singer watch would cost.

Auto manufacturers have been into watches for a while though.

No. Fuck branding. I’ll buy a dishwasher handmade by an eight year old if they can make it properly. [pissed about dropping coin on brand name washer, dishwasher, and fridge that had problems three years after purchase]. I’m buying retro stuff next time and fixing it up myself.

Interesting thought. I know that Porsche has designed a bunch of stuff and most recently they designed their own Microsoft Surface Book . I think if Toyota came out with a consumer appliance line it would definitely sell well.

No. Because it will just cost a premium and will be a ploy to make money off a name without any extra value added.

We used to have a GM fridge. The thing was awesome and lasted like 30 years. No freezer though, so we had to get a small chest freezer, which was also awesome.

I believe in the business principle of the hedgehog, despite the well known issues squirrels and hedgehogs have. It states that your business should be the intersection of what you are passionate about, what you can be the best in the world at and what can drive the core economic engine for your business (i.e. if you are a hedgehog BE a hedgehog...but really be a squirrel, they are just better). side businesses and name whoring don’t inspire me with confidence that this could be the best...whatever...in its segment. Now if there was a keystone technology that just happened to be an automakers tech that was:

a. best in the world

b. germane to the core business of making cars

c. also applicable outside of cars

Then maybe. Like if Lamborghini had a type of carbon that was cheaper, stronger, lighter and proprietary then sure, I would by interesting in seeing subtle “MCF by Lamborghini” on it.

Notable exemption would be car makers that are also makers of other things. Like this.

Cause these just happen to be amazing products that share a name and parent company with cars we know and love (even though they are separate business ventures)
