Okay confession time... I think these look cool. I know they’re horrible but I think the styling is interesting, especially from the rear

I always imagined Lucille Bluth driving one of these instead of a W126.

The only thing my dad ever said was bad about these cars was the tops getting left open in Tennessee during the Spring/Summer. I don’t even leave my sunroof cracked most days. The rain comes and dumps an inch or more and the disappears.

I honestly can’t think of hardly any things that would be considered defective on these cars, common or rare. I think i’ve installed some radios in these once or twice in 4 years? A/C blend doors possibly once? Seat belts I know i’ve done on these more than twice. O2 sensors but that’s in the maintenance/tune up catagory.

Damn these cars were solid. The engine is so damn detuned it’s ridiculous. Just begging for forced induction and a full exhaust system at least

Every UZ needs forced induction. They’re incredible engines. The plan is a 2UZ in our FJ40 with the 4Runner Oil pan.

I’ve often called this one of the ugliest cars of all time. People are like “Yeah, but what about Aztek?!?!?!” But cars like the Aztek and Juke are trying to be fun and quirky. This was trying to be super serious, expensive, well-built, and made to look like an expensive yacht (per the design chief himself). It was too serious for its own fugly good. This angle looks decent. Every other angle, notsomuch.

I actually always sort of liked these. The problem is it’s a budget Mercedes SL, which is very much an indulgence of a car, from a “practical” (for luxury) brand like Lexus.

I’d wager that the people who would buy a Lexus convertible, are the type of customers who buy the assorted midsize 2+2 convertibles from the Germans, i.e. 4-series, A5, CLK/E-class, etc.

The IS convertible was closer to the mark but it had a tiny back seat and the folding hard top ate most of the trunk when lowered. Come out with something with a soft top and a bigger back seat, and it would have a better chance.

My dad drives a Saab 9-3 Aero convertible and whenever I’ve brought up the topic of a hardtop convertible to him he balks at the lack of cargo space with the top down.

Fake wood says no.

Also it replaced a Supra relative, looked bland and drove like a pig to boot.

It’s not the worst car in the world, but it achieves nothing exciting or luxurious, it just happens to be very tacky.

The only thing that I hated about these were the wheels that appeared to have a large dinner plate bolted into the center. With proper 5 spokes it’s not so bad.

03/08/2017 at 18:50, STARS: 0

No. This is the most pointless Lexus ever.

Is it fast? No.
Is it attractive? No.
Do the rear seats serve any purpose? No.
Does it handle well? No.
Did anyone ask for a retractable hardtop Lexus? No.

Is it expensive? Yes.

Versus its competition... it offers nothing. An overweight blob that would probably be good on the highway, but offers so little room inside especially for its weight!

I have always felt this way about this car.

Kinja'd!!! "JR1" (type35bugatti)
03/08/2017 at 19:50, STARS: 0

The lack of cargo is an issue. But the hardtop makes so much more sense in a cold weather climate.

Kinja'd!!! "jdrgoat - Ponticrack?" (jdrgoat)
03/08/2017 at 20:20, STARS: 0

Corvettes are reliable. Porsche 911s are reliable (except for that bearing). M3 isn’t. AMG isn’t.

I’m having trouble thinking of anything that really competed with that turd... you may have a point. People wouldn’t really cross-shop a SC430 and a Corvette, totally different crowds.

I actually think the design has aged well, I know it wasn’t popular in its day, but I like it a lot compared to the current market. And yeah a performance version really would have been a game changer.

Kinja'd!!! "Chuckles" (chucklesw37)
03/08/2017 at 21:22, STARS: 1

I can tolerate those wheels on a car that isn’t trying to be fast, but on anything trying to be a sports car, it doesn’t work for me.

But the SC has never been a sports car. In the 90s it was a luxury coupe, and in the 2000s it was a luxury convertible. But I do think they need to be on something that can get away with “smaller” wheels. On the SC430 they look small, on the Older LS they are just right,

Kinja'd!!! "Chuckles" (chucklesw37)
03/08/2017 at 21:37, STARS: 0

That’s a fair point. I guess in my head, I always thought of SC as standing for Sports Coupe, even if it was a luxury grand tourer.

Kinja'd!!! "jdrgoat - Ponticrack?" (jdrgoat)
03/09/2017 at 12:39, STARS: 0

Hmmm. Jaguar is known for GT cars and being unreliable, no go there. Ferrari makes GT cars, that are prohibitively expensive and require massive upkeep costs, no go there. An Infiniti could be considered a good competitor, except for the convertible part.

I like my GTO as a GT car... and it’s been dead reliable. I think it would do everything except for convertible as well as an SC430.

I just don’t see the point in the SC430 even as a GT car. Unless the point is to have a small interior, moderate performance, moderate fuel economy, blah styling...

Kinja'd!!! "JR1" (type35bugatti)
03/09/2017 at 13:58, STARS: 0

The thing about a GTO is the interior isn’t as luxurious. To some people that’s important

I suppose. But it does have way better seats. And full-size adult men can fit in the back seats, after they’ve contorted their bodies to get there.

The SC430 also has a tape deck. So, I mean, that’s old school cool.
