I’m going to be in New York first week in April and want to do some mountain biking. I’ve looked a bit on singletracks.com but I’m not quite sure what would be the best place to go. Kind of deciding between Sprain, Beacon, and Lippman; so all over. I’m open to suggestions. But I also need help finding a place that rents mountain bikes, all that I’ve checked so far only do road and hybrid.

Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill has a lot of trails. It’s accessible from the MTA North stop. Watch out for trash and broken glass. The MTA is picky about when and how many bikes it allows on a train, so watch out for that as well.

Cunningham Park on Long Island has some pretty fun trails. They’re mostly flat-ish and quite twisty.

I recall looking for a local shop that rented mountain bikes for a visiting friend years ago. Mountain rentals were few and very far between.

https://www.trailforks.com/region/new-york/

I use trail forks for finding new areas to ride. They also have an app for your phone that is really handy. As far as renting is concerned I would if you can, ground ship your own bike to your destination and when you are ready to go just ground ship it back to your house. Depending on distance UPS ground should be in the $50-$75 range.

If you do so, pack the tools you’ll need for assembly/disassembly in the box too! Wrap em well so they don’t damage your bike.

I’ve seen a few instances of this happening, bike gets to destination, and then the owner is all, ‘oh wait, how am I going to put my pedals back on...’

Cool, I’ll check that site out.

Shipping is a lot of work though. Renting is usually under $75 for a day and is pretty painless. I’ve done it before and it’s usually only a ten minute process. Plus you get a fairly new bike with decent tech, as compared to my own bike which I intend to replace soon.

I’m a fan of trail forks. It has guided me in several excursions in Idaho and Wyoming now.

Hopefully trails are in better shape in NY than here in NH. We are more than a month from riding anything in the woods, due to snow and ice. But I know it’s different down closer to The City.

Good point. But we will try either way. Worst case we break some bones and come away with a good story!

Downstate I think you’d be ok. Just check ahead if rental places are open yet, obviously. Again, here in NH bike shops are still doing skis...

Actually wait. Lots of bike shops are open year round now doing fat tires. So... that could be a thing to try out if you haven’t yet.

Actually having a hard time finding any place to rent anything other than road bikes. We might have found one, but they didn’t answer the phone.

Checked out trail forks. Is excellent. I like it much better than single tracks. Thanks.

Trailforks is an offshoot from pink bike which has become a primer mountain bike web site, I read pink bike almost every day.

Give them a call. They are a good bike shop up in Rockland County.

Someone mentioned Peekskill, and with you being in West Point, that is probably your best bet. Google search for Blue Mountain, Graham Hills, and Stewart.

Cool, thanks! So we’re flying in Monday the third. Renting a cargo van at the airport. Staying at a hotel in Nyack that night. Renting bikes from a shop in the area. Then riding at probably either Graham hills, blauvelt, or blue mountain Tuesday morning. We have to be to west point by 3:45pm Tuesday.
