Any experiences with the Audi Multitronic?

Since you guys helped me along last night with my decision that a big diesel isn’t the right engine choice right now, I am exploring other options. This A5 with the 2.0 TFSI seems like a good compromise between power and fuel consumption BUT it comes with a Multitronic. A quick google search tells me that it’s a CVT and not a good one. Owners complain that it’s hesitant off the line, making merging into traffic needlessly interesting. It also needs regular ATF flushes which have to be performed at an Audi dealership, or so the forums say. But I’d rather trust you, so any experiences with that gearbox?

It’s a shame that it doesn’t come with the S-tronic or a full-on manual, as this would actually be an interesting car. I don’t care that it’s not a coupe. Or is it? ;) It is about the right size, and it looks good. I need a large rear hatch and fold down rear seats to throw a bike or my folding canoe in the back. I also like the rear doors to put stuff in the rear seats, but don’t really want to put adults there for longer trips. And those plaid seat covers are quite a nice touch as well.

CVT should have been enough to make you run.

My godfather had a 2011 Audi A4 2.0 TDI Avant with the Multitronic and didn’t have any problems in the period he drove it. The car had 240.000 km. Afaik Audi got rid of most problems with the B8 generation. A test drive is a must of course.

A midsize Audi sedan with 2.0t and CVT is about as bland as I can imagine. In other words, you ’ re paying a premium for nothing particularly interesting, but I ’ m the type of person who never understood sedans unless you ’ re obsessed with the style (and face it, the A5 is not the A7 in the handsomeness department). I would lean 100% towards an A4 Avant before an A5 sedan, based on what you need. Maybe even a Q5, which is pretty nice (my parents have one). Viel Glueck, Klaus!

At least give it a test drive? It comes with + and - on the shift pattern so it might at least consider some input??? I have never driven a CVT.

Might be worth driving to see how awful they are. They’re bad. They’re like an automatic, but worse.

I don’t like them. Yes, they need to be serviced every 35k, and any good independent can do it. Those boxes ruin the car and if Audi’s first attempt at CVTs in the last generation cars are anything to go by, they won’t last. They make a feeble attempt to mimic gears, but fail at it. The engine never feels positively engaged to the wheels.

Multi not DSG, otherwise we wouldn’t be having this discussion.

I could be wrong, but I think the CVT is fwd only. Not sure if that has any impact on your decision. Lots of people assume (not saying you do) all Audi’s have some version of quattro all wheel drive as standard.

Interestingly, the Multitronic was made by LuK who also do Audi’s 7 speed twin clutch ‘box.

Not many know that.

I am well aware that there are FWD and AWD Audis, and this car in particular is described as AWD in the ad.
