Watch in awe as he marvels at such technological advances as rain sensing wipers and automatic headlamps. Does it have a carphone? You know it has a car phone. The future is here!

Watch as he destroys an SLK, a Boxster, and a DB7 in a straight line, because on 3/08 Day, dreams are possible and that’s a completely realistic outcome.

Are X308s the most reliable cars in the world ? Old new Top Gear says “yes!”

I want a X350 because aluminium.

you get none more british than saying you drive something with 23 syllables. “aluminium jaaaAAaaaggguuuaarrrrrhrrrhrr”

True, but then you trade the X308's beautiful, beautiful rear for a bloated mess.

X308 XJ-Rs are supposedly way more reliable than you’d expect. They have a stronger transmission, which was a weak point on the standard V8 cars. And the supercharger is just an eaton unit, not some crackpot Jag effort

I really, really, really wish my N/A had the R’s transmission instead of the crap ZF.

looks better in black. silver makes almost anything bad.

I think it’s the opposite. Black makes everything look good, because it hides the lines.

Kinja'd!!!

With lines like that, why hide them?

I forgot I was talking to our resident X308 expert! These are getting surprisingly expensive, people are getting nostalgic for the last “real” Jags I guess?

I really wouldn’t be surprised if they start going up in value. With tensioners and cooling problems, a lot of less knowledgable owners probably end up sending them to an early grave. Although it’s hard to tell, because my sense is that a lot of sellers overprice them “because it’s a luxury car.” Like this hilariously overpriced one from an undesirable model year with no mention of doing the timing chain tensioners.

Although you can still find some in an appropriate $2k–$4k range.

The Rs are especially nuts on the old man pricing front. 10-15K asking prices for low mileage stuff. I’d consider buying one but its SO difficult find something reasonable

Every once in a while I’ll see R’s around $4–5k, but they get snatched up really quick. I’m always really tempted, but I can’t justify supporting two X308s. I think if my transmission goes, I’ll probably think long and hard about whether to rebuild or just upgrade to an R.

Yeah a lower mileage R should be like 7-8K I think, that’s what I’d go for. It’d be a sweet upgrade from the Q, that’s for sure! My only concern would be the Nikasil block stuff but from what I’ve read, it seems like that’s mostly a European problem to start with, and anything left around in the US probably won’t fail if it hasn’t already?

They stopped using Nikasil with MY 2001, so long as you go with MYs 2001–2003, you don’t have to worry. I’ve seen people say the say the same thing, but I’d rather have the peace of mind of not having it in the first place.

yeah I’d rather have the peace of mind and I’ve heard the ‘02 - ‘03 exception before, they are just so hard to find!
