I didn’t like it. Spoilers ahead. Also a rant.

Kinja'd!!!

Again another film that has good cinematography, is well acted, but has a plot that makes a pre-teen fanfic look like Shakespeare.

So logan is old and dying now, making him less OP. As is Prof. X . It’s heavily implied all the other main people are dead too. A pretty good setup. A plot involving a scary corporation in league with the government creating child soldier mutants, And one of them made from leftover logan..... genes. Nice. Still O.K. That is when the whole plot derails.

This is in the order of my thoughts, not the actual movie.

One of the plot points is that in order to handicap them so that they couldn’t just call in reinforcements is that not only are all the x-men dead, but apparently there havent been any new mutants born for 25 years.

at the tail end the bad guy tells wolverine that they have been manipulating people’s genes for years to prevent mutants. Through food. COMPLETELY WITHOUT BEING PROPMPTED. Apparently with the cooperation of the FDA, multiple major food manufacturers, and production line employees. For decades. And it never leaked.

Also GENETIC MANIPULATION THROUGH FOOD! THAT’S NOT HOW IT WORKS JESUS DID YOU SKIP 7th GRADE SCIENCE?

Also, apparently the first thing they did by creating this miracle technology wasn’t to cure cancer, or genetically inherited diseases, or a comprehensive eugenics program (which could be made evil to fit with bad guy motives) They got rid of mutants. And literally nothing the fuck else. All so they could “control” mutants and make supersoldiers. Also deploy these supersoldiers without anyone noticing.

Also they couldn’t control these childeren, even though what’s his face developed a mind control drug something like 4 movies ago and they have had 25 years. Also THERE ARE REAL MOTHERFUCKING CHILD SOLDIERS IN AFRICA RIGHT NOW. I am pretty sure you can train kids to reliably kill people.

Wolverine has multiple chances to kill the head lackey, after just having murdered some 30-50 guys, but declines because reasons. Also said lackey manages to find a goddamn picture left behind with the exact GPS coordinates that they need to find the kids. Because otherwise they would have been fucked.

All of this is strung along also because they just so happen to have one goddamn character that can track mutants and is also impossibly easy to torture.

Basically, the sole reason this movie exists is because “The Huge Jacked Man”(tm) doesn’t want to do these movies anymore, and neither does Patrick Stewart, but they pretty much fucked their chances at continuing this universe because they basically prevented mutation.

Stop treating me like I am some dumbass cash cow hollywood.

EDIT: there was also no character development. At all. Meaning I don’t actually feel bad for the poor widdle girl who has 5 lines of dialogue in the whole movie.

And in the rich history of Wolverine’s enemies...the best they got is a younger CGI clone of him?!

Basically they ripped off x men origins wolverine having wolverine fighting a stronger wolverine, and you figure they accomplished that science bullshit in what, the timeline equivalent of the 1980s? And this is like 2026 or some bullshit?

I also saw it last night, was left thinking “did Monsanto run over the writer’s dog?” Between the HAHA EVIL ANTI-MUTANT FOOD and the EVIL FARM ENCROACHING ON RANCHER thing. And yeah, the child soldier thing - just make it about maturation time and being a pain in the ass, guys, maybe unpredictable results in mutant gene activation - not CHILDREN ARE INCORRUPTIBLE AND HOLY. This in the movie with a little girl stabbing people in the face. Derp.

I’d have been okay with a “no new mutants being born” plotpoint, but the one we got was kind of dire.

I also don’t think the unraveling of the “feral child” trope that we got was particularly smooth.

I didn’t hate it, but issues... yeah.

Showing that little girl killing people indescriminately disturbed me a bit. And I liked hobo with a shotgun.

There was absolutely no character development in the whole movie because they were too busy killing people. Making the emotional conclusion ring completely hollow.

Things like this never stopped the comics from making completely different story arcs with characters that have died in other story arcs.

I was able to see the character development they were aiming for, but I don’t think they portrayed it successfully. It also speaks to some of the flaws that in a real sense Logan himself was treated intermittently as the antagonist of the film for a lot of it, and use of tropes like Redemption Equals Death was in full force.

I’ll tell you what the movie secretly was copying homework from - The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. Car chase scenes, fights, dusty hopelessness, dramatic death of sympathetic female figures, feral child, Tribe of Children, Ax Crazy but pretentious antagonist with hordes of stops-at-nothing goons and a physical threat second in command, Save The Children subplot, physical frailty and abuse of the main character, other character or characters serving as The Load while reminding the protagonist of what he could/should be...

Basically, I liked the film better with the other Australian in it. So to speak.

Well, to be fair, the whole mutants among us with super powers concept requires you to forget anything you ever knew about genetics and biology anyway. So...

But, you need to at least be internally consistent with your delusional universe. Isn’t Logan supposed to be effectively immortal due to his healing powers? Clearly I missed some development, and that tells you how closely I follow the X-Men movies.

I found Logan depressing from the outset. Afterward I decided that I’m going to treat it as its own sorta one-off continuity because while it references earlier outings, the X-Men franchise as a whole is very messy continuity-wise and this was just bleak .

After all that time being invested in these characters (plus me being a huge Star Trek nerd so I love Patrick Stewart), the situation they’re in at the very beginning of the movie is like, damn, this sucks for these guys!

I didn’t like how Professor X got killed. I understand killing him off in some way, but not this way. Bah.

Eriq La Salle and his nice family get totally screwed .

Kinja'd!!!

But I know they were really playing up the “this is a western” aspect and the nice family that takes in the main character and winding up dead because of the bad guys is a trope in westerns. I mean, they even have a scene fighting over a well, basically.

The scene with Professor X talking about how this was the best night he’s had in a long time but he doesn’t deserve it, that was just heartbreaking. Patrick Stewart nails it. He does his best with the material but they could’ve found a better way to kill him.

Yes there are many plot holes but my experience watching the movie was more a feeling of disappointment at the crap deal these characters have wound up in, and not liking it. As opposed to say, when I saw Batman v Superman which I knew going into it was going to be dumb and I found myself right from the beginning thinking about all the ways it is so, so dumb .

I think the X-Men franchise as a whole is going to be rebooted in some way.

They’ve tried too many ways to half reboot it while preserving the overall continuity, but also retcon certain movies that did unpopular things (X-Men 3, Wolverine Origins) out of the continuity, and setting things in the past from First Class forward.

Apocalypse was just crap. Promising concept done in a totally unsatisfying way.

At this point, any new X-Men movie with the current messy continuity would have to exist somewhere in between the 80s setting of Apocalypse, and the terrible future of Logan, while not overlapping with the first two movies.

I suppose you could pick things up in the 90s and do some kind of prequel to the first X-Men, but then you have the problem of needing new actors to play characters who are direct predecessors to super recognizable people like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

Because this...

Is already a stretch.

Fox is going to do something, because the franchise makes money, but my hopes are not exactly high.

Its like wolverine didn’t learn from that kindly old couple that got killed in his origin movie, or how the bad guys constantly know where they are.
