I need more info on engines
Lets take 3 common engines - 4 cyl. 6 cyl and 8 cyl. For this discussion, let’s say 2 liter, 3 liter and 4 liter respectively. No turbos. no superchargers. All 3 will allegedly make a car go. Let’s put all 3 engines in same size and weight car.
What should we expect to see performance wise? Will 4 cyl be slowest? and 8 cyl be fastest? because cylinder count?
Will 6 cyl be faster than 4 and 8 because weight of 8 make car much heavier? and 4 cyl engine won’t have enough oomph?

If we keep everything hyper-simple the 8 will be fastest.
The 8 cyl car will have twice the power of the 4cyl car, but only twice the engine weight (not twice the car weight).
Same vs the 6cyl. IT has 1/3 more HP, but only 1/3 more engine weight.

Is doubling displacement equal to doubling power?
If I had a 8 cylinder with 8 liter engine - would that be 4x power?

in the real world? No. Way, way, way to many variables, starting with most 4cyl engines are inline and most 8cyl are V8.
But in general, barring forced induction, more cylinders = more HP. And the added weight of the larger engine is not enough to negate the added HP.

You can make this a little easier by comparing engines that are based on other engines. Examples: a chevy 4.3 V6 is basically a 5.7 V8 with two cylinders cut off. Compare two identical 1993 C1500 trucks, one with 4.3 and one with 5.7, and the V8 is faster. Or a Dakota 3.9 v6 vs 5.2 V8. or a Ford Taurus 3.0 Duratec v6 vs an Aston Martin vantage 6.0 V12 (both cars are actually within 100lbs of each other)
Other than that, you have way too many variables to compare.

I am trying to figure out obsession of displacement and cylinder number. I can get a nice 2 liter engine with 4 cylinders and it will go not far behind a 6 cyl or 8 cyl cars.
