Most cars people are all over I really don’t care about. I mean, I’d take one if I was given one, and I’d enjoy a chance to drive them, but at the end of the day I just don’t care. And at the other end of the scale, there’s a bunch of stuff many people would have no interest in that I want very badly to at least experience once.
Supercars and hypercars? For the most part I don’t care.
Koeniggsdfeeeegggeegreooeeegggg? Bugatti? Meh, I’d rather drive one of these:
Honestly there are two supercars that interest me, and Ferrari makes both of them. These two.
Not even a Huayra gets me going. I love the crazy, I love the tech (that goes for the Veyron too) but as a package I have no real interest in driving it. So... let’s move down the chain:
This is kind of a middle ground. It’s cool, I like it, I kinda want to drive one sometime but I don’t really have a serious interest. Maybe the drive would shift me firmly into one camp or the other, who knows. The building blocks are there. In a similar vein:
One I want, one I would have only with a specific engine drivetrain combo, the other I don’t want at all. I have no interest in the FoRS. Or the FoST for that matter. And I would take a Golf GTI over a Golf R.
Let’s move on to Mazda’s lineup. I have no interest in this, of any generation.
The RX-8... Now this I can get on board with.
This, however is a total different story. I want one. Now.

Realizing that I’ll probably never own a super car, I understand where you’re coming from. To me the performance cars from BMW, Mercedes, etc are more important then the latest Ferrari, Lamborghini, or McLaren, as I might have a chance to own a BMW, but a Ferrari, probably not.

Makes sense. You’d rather lust over mostly attainable things. I feel a similar way. Supercars are cool, but I’ll never own one. However, owning something like a Mustang or a hot hatch or even a 911 seems a lot more attainable, so it makes sense to drool over them.

I honestly prefer front-engined GT cars. I’d have any Aston over any Fezza, any day. For me it’s less about $$ than it is about “I just don’t want it” but the money argument certainly cements the issue.

I agree, largely. Especially about he Bugattis. Never mind the facts that I could never afford one; if you gave me one for free, I couldn’t afford to drive it anywhere near its limit; and wouldn’t have anywhere to drive it near its limit. They’re also just supremely ugly. You didn’t mention it, but I also don’t get what anyone sees in Maseratis, either. To me, they just look like a poor person’s Aston.
I honestly wonder how much that has to do with it. Consciously Idon’t thing it affects me because I’m not even interested in driving them, and there are some pretty pricy things up there--LM002 and F40 for example--but unconsciously knowing I’ll never be able to buy them and knowing I’m to cheap to if I could has got to have some effect on my thinking.

Astons don’t do anything for me. Personally I’d rather have a 911 turbo over just about anything else, if I had the money. As you could drive that everyday. Also, if i did have that kind of money I’d rather have a bunch of M cars as opposed to one expensive car. Nope. Not until it’s a Cammaster. I’d have a DBS, V12Vantage or Rapide for preference, but in general I like Aston’s offerings (Btw I should have said “Any Fezza but the F40").
And I’m with you on the money front, I’d probably end up with a fleet of “SS” cars...
That would make a great car better, but as it sits I’m still right.
Final challenge: find me a comparable Roadmaster Wagon (comparable to the Volvo I posted) for $3,000. The Roadmaster doesn’t need to stoop to your level because it’s just better. Nevertheless, challenge accepted. Here’s a $3500 example: Here’s an $800 example in questionable condition but looks like it could be made into a decent DD for the remaining $2200. I disagree with you on anything with active aero that’s as cool to look at as the Huayra’s. Because that’s just hilarious to watch. I cannot detect a pattern in your automotive desires. I kinda agree with the no supercars metric, I think that anymore there is no real reason to buy them. Here are my picks:

I feel what you’re saying, even if my choices aren’t exactly the same as yours. I was all about super cars when I was a kid, but I think I grew out of them. Nowadays, what I really want is quality and interesting. Big bonus points for uniqueness. This is level 7 car nerd. Level 1 is “ferrari’s are the fastest cars ever dude, so sweet!” Level 10 is 2 divorces and a bankruptcy or 2 but a SWEET garage of mutant projects, one offs and restorations. Somewhere in the 3-5 range is the Average Jalopnik commentor. Oppo hovers between the 6-8 range. What a vehicle needs is character. For me, most supercars just don’t seem to have it. Would I change my mind if I drove them? On some, probably. But I just don’t care to find out in the first place so it doesn’t matter.
And raw speed and power=/=character. That’s probably the hardest thing to realize and accept.
This is useful information. I can now use my newfound knowledge to exploit Oppo.

I want a Toyota Century, MR2 Supra w/3.5L V6 Swap, a GX470 Expedition Rig, My LS400 with three hundred thousand miles, a FJ55, and then for my Nice cars - LS500(new one) and LX570. I think this puts me in Oppo Territory of car nerdism. Look at my comment and tell me where I am on this scale. Very specific nerdism. Toyota nerdism.

It really comes down to, I could want something else, but Toyota/Lexus make either the best or really close to it in a lot of different cases. I can’t judge you on your level, but if i did I would say you belong in oppo.

I think the Century puts me here by itself. Let alone the other weird things. How do you feel about this one? Well other then a Fiero(which are rough) where else do you find a stupid fast mid-engines car? AW11/S20 How many other Luxo barges at 300k? Better expedition vehicle then a Toyota/Lexus? Don’t tell me Land Rover because they have support Semis behind them. Any new luxury car that will be better past 2-3 years then LS/Lx? The FJ55 probably has the most competition. And then the Century... well it a JDM Limo. Nissan Prssident isn’t as cool though because no tattle tales I think.

I’m with you on the square body ‘Burbans!! My ideal spec would be some unbelievably eighties graphic/2 tone package, the barn doors of course, and a 454 with the 4 speed. That’s true. There are some high end cars that call to me, but not the ones that were built to be status symbols. I like the ones that are meant to be driven. Like I said, for you. We have decidedly different points of view here. I don’t care how good something might be, if it doesn’t line up with my tastes or character expectations it’s not a match. Mid-engined, ain’t care... I’d just as soon front engined. But I’ll concede here, because there’s not really anything else, and while I would prefer the Fiero because I could drop an LS4 in it, I can’t make the case that it’s better. Older Cadillacs, Mercs. Lexus has the most recent good record, but I wouldn’t put my money on ANYTHING modern. I’d prefer a Jeep or lightly modded Blazer, personally. I concede this one for best overall too though. You’re right, “any”. Everything is shit these days. Or alternately, everything is really good but expensive to fix. Either way it’s a level pack. FJ55... not sure what point you’re making with it.

Pickup - My own preference is Silverado. But as of today, I’d say tie between F150 and Silvy 1500, and 3-way tie for the 2500/3500's.
Van - Probably the Sprinter.
Family Sedan - Gonna say Mazda6.
Front-engined sports car - Miata, duh. Though it doesn’t interest me. Fiat 124 does though...
Supercar - As awesome as the LFA is it’s not even close here. F40 is right answer anyway. I bought a MK6 Golf R over the MK6 GTI Autobahn because modding was inevitable, and I don’t like high powered FWD cars. It’s pointless. I want a Land Cruiser FJ62 with a diesel and a stick. And as of a few days ago a Panamera 4S Sport Turismo. I’m also tempted to sell my F250 7.3 and get a pickup/SUV that’s more fun. It feels like such a tank now compared to the new car. I agree with you on modern day super cars – I’ve literally stopped paying attention. I have no idea what the newest Ferrari, McLaren, or Lambo is or what kind of power it makes. If I see one in person, sure it’ll be entertaining to watch or I’ll be giddy if I get to drive one (never have)…but as far as WANTING one, nope. Even if I were given one I’d turn right back around and sell it to buy myself a boatload of weird older used cars. BMW E91 wagon in RWD with a stick, yes please. A Volvo V70R with enough buffer to not care about maintenance costs, gimme more! V8 M3 sedan, E63 AMG, CTS-V wagon, I’ll take all of them. And a couple of old land cruisers, an S2000 to replace the one I wrongfully sold a few years ago, an STi, and an Audi RS4 for the fun of it. And If I’m ever, ever in the market for anything that costs over $50k, then it sure as hell will be for a mint condition vintage Alfa, BMW E9, or something else of that nature. That’s really the only market segment I could see myself spending stupid amounts of money in IF I could ever afford it…something old, non-flashy by today’s standards, and usable to the level where you could mostly push it to its limits on planet earth. And these aren’t even cars from my childhood, having been born in ’85.
Two “super” cars I want to drive:
Porsche 959 and an F 40.
Otherwise I’m happy with a peppy Mazda and an occasionall jaunt in a 1971 Datsun 240z with about 350 HP.
I’ve driven the Mk7 Golf R, and I just felt so... boring. Like it needed to be going twice as fast to properly enjoy it. I don’t like FWD in general, but I feel like the Golf is best enjoyed with FWD. For me something that costs over 50k would probably be a Denali pickup or a Cadillac of some kind if new and a mint restored muscle car of some description if old. I’d love to drive a 959. I’d love to own an F40. That’s the difference for me.
They are both amazing cars but the F40 IMO is just a step up in crazy over the Porsche so I am in total agreement with you.

I almost gave up the 911 search and was gonna pull the trigger on a MKVII Golf R when I found the 997 that I did. I wasn’t interested in any other newer car...certainly not the boy racer trio (STI, Evo, FoRS). Mayyyybe the Mustang GT..
Nah, it was more the whole fast car slow vs slow car fast thing. That thing just grips and GRIPS and

It felt boring as hell on the road, at least to me.
As far as AWD 2.0T cars go, I had more fun in an ecoboost Fusion. Don’t ask me to explain that.
And as far as fun hatches go, I’d get a FiST. I can’t say I enjoyed the Fiesta I drove more in general because it was a base auto and that autobox is utter shit, but damn that thing was fun in the corners. The FiST, with more power and a manual seems about right.
