Today is XJ8 day.

Fun X308 facts:

If you insert the key into the driver’s door and unlock the door and then hold the key in position, all of the windows will roll down and the sunroof will open. If you hold it in the close position, everything closes. The same thing happens using the central locking button.

The glove compartment has a second level for keeping registration documents.

The X308 has a single wiper that moves roughly 180° and routes the washer jet up through the arm. It is the best wiper design in history.

The proper place to store your owner’s manual is in the trunk.

Bonus: if the doors refuse to lock because they think a door or the trunk is open, or if message center says there’s an ABS or traction control fault, the proper way to fix this—as written in the service manual—is to turn the car off and restart it, because Jags are basically Windows 95.

I’m using Freedom Calendar conventions for this. Rest assured, there shall be two X308 days this year.

Surprisingly trouble free. The big cost came mostly when I first bought it, because it needed its plastic timing chain tensioners replaced with aluminum ones as a prevention. Other than that, the only mechanical problem I’ve had over two years and 35,000 miles is that it would blow its hoses, so I had to replace the thermostat and upgrade the thermostat housing and water pump impeller to aluminum.

The only other obnoxious part has been the suspension, since it’s so damn complicated and expensive and I’ve had to basically replace every piece of the front suspension. I’m actually bringing it in shortly to have the rear shocks and suspension replaced as needed.

What are registration documents? Isn’t just an insurance card and license, that always confuses me when people say it. I’m not judging you just wondering what it is technically considered.

When I got my Lexus, I was veeeeeerrrryyy tempted by a 2001 XJ8 in a gorgeous sky blue. Lovely cream interior, but it had 178K miles and the CEL was on. But it was only $2200...

*not the actual car, but looked the same*

Honestly, at 178k with a CEL and $2200, that was pretty CP, so you made a good call. $2200 is basically excellent condition bluebook with fewer miles, and if the PO didn’t do it, it would have needed the secondary tensioners replaced to the tune of $1400.

Plus, I once asked my Jag specialist what I could realistically hope to get out of mine assuming that I continued being super obsessive about routine maintenance and he told me that I could expect 200k, but that he’d never seen one go much farther beyond that.
