Kinja'd!!!

After the jump.

This morning at work my boss me to sweep around the front walk way, lots of snow just melted & it be a mess. He also asked me sweep up the cigarette butts in the staff smoking area. I agreed and did it. In the (almost) 1 year I’ve been working here I have not stepped foot in the smokers area (I don’t smoke). Thinking about that since I don’t use then area, & it was everyone else’s mess. There is coffee can for the butts, but they are all over the ground. Would have it been rude to tell him that they should clean up their own mess or put their butts in the can.

Not at all. Even if a cleaning person was regularly hired, they ought to be responsible for their own mess.

Nope. That’s what the cab is for, after all.

When we have to tidy our shop up extra thoughoughly for a safety inspection I purposely choose to not sweep up cigarette butts. It’s illegal for guys to be smoking inside the workplace and I always hope they get fined for it. They never do though.

Back in high school, at my first job that wasn’t working for my dad, the one thing I refused to do was clean the ashtray (this was back when you were allowed to smoke inside a store, the ashtray was right inside the door to the back room). Of the 30 employees there, only three of them didn’t smoke, one of which was me. It was the only task I ever refused to do. In hindsight, I probably should’ve just did it and not been such a baby about it, but I didn’t get fired.

Yes. You’re an employee. Do your job.

You can discuss it with your boss after, but unless it’s something you’d stake your job on, suck it up buttercup.

not rude at all to ask smokers to clean up after themselves.

I would have done it if a boss had asked, but.... if I were the owner of the business I would not be happy that some of my employees were making a trash can out of the front of the business. It just looks bad/unprofessional/hillbilly/ whatever. I would have made those responsible clean it up and if they didn’t would ban them from smoking on site.
