Welcome to Things You Probably Didn’t Know, the series where I tell you things you probably didn’t know.

In this installment you probably didn’t know that the S550 Mustang has no physical door locks. There’s only a button by the handle and a light where the plunger would traditionally be.

The Fusion shares this feature.

I didn’t know this. 10/10 was successful for “I didn’t know”.

That seems like it could cause issues. Is there an emergency release anywhere?

Aren’t most modern cars like this?

A light, huh? So you don’t get a real plunger there unless you check the right box on the order sheet?

My Fiesta is similar. Just a button located by all the stereo controls, not on the doors. And it locks/unlocks all the doors/trunk simultanteously. Also, not even any fake door mechanism/light on the doors.

Using the inside door handle to open the door automatically disengages the lock for that door (as opposed to using the button, which unlocks all the doors).

I doubt it’s even an option.

Probably. In my experience quite a few still have a physical switch on the handle

Pretty sure it’s just a Ford thing, as even the Fiesta has it.

tru dat.

Random unrelated question. What class are you running this year in auto-x?

That makes a lot of sense. And also proves I haven’t been in a new car.

Huh. ’Cuz it looks to be in the right spot. And I’m not sure if they would have picked that placement if there wasn’t already a hole for the plunger.

I wonder which would be considered the “high-end” version, though: an auxiliary control plunger, or “ooh, pretty lights”?

Must be a ford thing, my mom’s 2014 fusion has the red light instead of the plunger.

They made it so European... My Focus just has lock/unlock buttons and a light on the lock button when locked. It doesn’t even have that weird light where a plunger would usually be...

If you want weird, the back doors on my car require two pulls to unlock/open, just like all the other German cars I’ve encountered made in the last decade or so.

The C6 corvette doesn’t even have. Physical handles, just buttons.

STP. Since the tune should be legal in it next year and no one else will run it locally. Also I have a strut brace which puts me in ST.

It’s going to dominate DS though if you’re stock

I have the highest end interior. I’m sure it’s there because people expect there to be a lock, so the security light is where it would traditionally be

yeah, not stock with a COBB tune, lowering springs, K-brace, strut bar... will be swapping out boost hardware likely in a few months. I classed myself into SM for the boost mods ahead of where I am now, so I land in the right spot.

If you swap out boost hardware, then SM is probably right. I’d have to go dig through the rule to see if you’d be legal, but ESP might be a better fit just because the PAX is better.

Even with allowing boost tunes in ST, SCCA is pretty unfair to turbo cars if you want to be competitive. I feel like by the rules you can play around with an NA motor a lot more before dropping into a weird mod or prepared class. If you just want to have fun I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’m mostly out there to have a good time and be competitive in my region on raw time and PAX, and even PAX I probably won’t look good this year cause STP isn’t great and I don’t plan on doing suspension mods besides a swaybar, maybe.

does it still work the old school Ford way that if you just tug on the handle, the door unlocks? if not how do you get out if the battery dies?

Is there a child safety witch in the door you can usem

03/08/2017 at 18:49, STARS: 0

yeah, ESP would be better for PAX, but really I agree with you. I’m out to have fun with my car and learn better car control. SM is a pretty small class, so even if there are faster cars/drivers in the group I feel OK about it. I’ve always been more or less “law and order” so I’m going to follow the rules as they’re set, though I agree, they’re not terribly fair for modifications to turbo cars.
