Had an idea to use these headless laptops I have lying around to integrate into my desk (thanks Tripper!)

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So let us begin!

Kinja'd!!!

Nope, Lenovo G560 is too big (15.6")

Kinja'd!!!

Negative, Lenovo Y470 is a no-go (14")

Kinja'd!!!

Yus! Early 2008 MacBook [4,1] (13.3") fits!

Kinja'd!!!

Damnation. And it’s also the slowest and does not have Wi-Fi antennae. Time to get the snips...

What good is having so many of them on the shelves if they can’t photobomb!

I have a small potential Frankenstein build and a laptop with a shot battery. Any sense in trying to scavenge the laptop for parts, or are they generally too specialized and incompatible?

If you still have the power supply, it generally works (rarely the power management elements freak out and slow everything; but again, rarely).

So you can do something similar. If you don’t need the computer itself, you could take the DVD drive out and throw it in an enclosure (same with the hard drive) to have spares. Or just read one of those Raspberry Pi guides they have on Lifehacker for ideas, because it could probably do the same things, just while taking up more space and electricity.

2008 macbook most definitely has wifi antenna! I think it’s underneath the keyboard.

Oh, it stills has the wireless card, but the antennae wires that were built into the sides of the display that went dark were thrown out with it. So it technically has Wi-Fi, but the range is better measured in centimeters.

Why do you have so many laptops without monitors connected to them?

Just collecting them because it’s not really cost effective to buy new displays and fix them, selling them for parts is too difficult and time consuming, but they still work just fine otherwise.
