I’m being offered a 2009 Vespa LX150 (dark blue/tan) with a large OEM windscreen for $500. According to the owner, it has a bad starter—but can be kickstarted—and has a scratch across the body. I found one just like it, though in better condition, for $2,500 on a Vespa forum. NP? As fun as it seems?

Even in not-great shape around here they are still sold for like $3K CAD, so $500 is a steal!

The 150cc models can get to around 96kph eventually, so plenty for everyday trips to work or quick jaunts to the store, etc!

Would love to get my motorcycle license myself and pick up a Vespa of my own.....I’m not a bike guy, really, at all, but I do quite like scooters! :)

Indeed. He’s on here all the time so should be easy to spot. Just follow the Sunchaser posts.

Wow, that makes it seem like a good move. I forgot that it would require a motorcycle license to operate, though, being over 50cc. I might buy it and hold on to it as I might not need it for a year or so, at which point I can get the license.

I’ve often considered a scoot, here in bc under 50cc doesn’t require a moto license- I would probably get one except for the kidlets need rides too.

I would ruckus all day..

I want one! My work commute tops out at 35mph so it would be perfect.

Check your local laws - some places let you ride bikes of a certain displacement on an automotive full license. I know here in Nova Scotia, Canada though, I need a bike license to operate any bike with a displacement bigger than 49cc...

In most states, if you get a learners permit you’re good to ride that scooter.

Thanks for the pointer, it turns out that nothing but a driver’s license is required for operating a scooter under 35 mph.

Looking at the laws for Virginia (where you said you are), nope.

“Moped” means every vehicle that travels on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground that (i) has a seat that is no less than 24 inches in height, measured from the middle of the seat perpendicular to the ground; (ii) has a gasoline, electric, or hybrid motor that (a) displaces 50 cubic centimeters or less or (b) has an input of 1500 watts or less; (iii) is power-driven, with or without pedals that allow propulsion by human power; and (iv) is not operated at speeds in excess of 35 miles per hour. For purposes of this title, a moped shall be a motorcycle when operated at speeds in excess of 35 miles per hour. For purposes of Chapter 8 (§ 46.2-800 et seq.), a moped shall be a vehicle while operated on a highway.

Because the engine is larger than 50 cc, not a moped. And, there’s a registration requirement for mopeds, which will quickly find out that it’s not a moped, per: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/vehicles/#moped.asp

Double check though - it may not be required for a scooter that is RESTRICTED to 35mph, not necessarily you DRIVING it at 35mph when it actually has a higher top speed.....big difference in the eyes of the law!
