So I composed this post awhile back about thinking about a second car to get for around $5000. As the post says, I was wanting a lot out of the car, awd probably, able to haul me to tahoe, go camping, etc. After some thought (and cheapness), I think what I was really longing for was something fun that can be a second car. Really the Mercedes seems to be in good shape, and can probably fit a lot of the needs I have for it (camping, long trips, etc) with just a bit more TLC, so I’ve been thinking of a different second car to be something fun.

Anyways, enough of that rambling. After some browsing, I’m kinda into Mk1 MR2s. Question is, in my mind, mid engine rwd car would be loads of fun for rallyx/autox, but I’m not sure how feasible that is. Mostly, I just wanted to post this picture.

One thing the folks around here complain about w RWD rallyX cars is that, in muddy conditions, sometimes the front tires don’t clear mud so well. (Same for the folks driving Mister Twos.) Otherwise, they look like a ton of fun and seem pretty easy on the racing budget.

Would a mid engined rwd car be a good rally X car?

Ahem:

Someone forgot about the Stratos. I did lots of searching to try to find an interesting Group-2 rally america solution and found the Fiero has a similar wheelbase/track ratio like the Stratos, and is only a few hundred pounds heavier. Given the right torwue and power, a mid-engined car can be a good time. I liked the Fiero idea because it would bolt up a GM 3850 v6 and suddenly have a probaly perfect engine for such sport.

Should you do an MR2 for rally X, look at swaps into the 1gen, such as plopping a 2nd gen engine into the 1st gen. 3Sgte seems to be a good one to do. Enjoy!

Throw in an LSD and lift it up a little and it would be amazing for rallycross.
