The ‘Hipster’ movement or thing that pervades today’s society has been laughed at mercilessly by most people around here, even me I must admit. But, I’m starting to appreciate and warm to the culture and starting to see the positive and upside to this ‘thing’

Yes it seems that ‘hipsters’ just take from or borrow bits and bobs from multiple eras and cultural movements and shifts and adopt them as their own. So some have said that this new generation really has nothing new or unique to their time and stamp on human evolution.

I’m not sure that’s fair and today after catching up with the Geneva Motor Show coverage I saw this:

Kinja'd!!!

This is the Range Rover Velar.

It’s kind of being billed as the BIG Evoque, but truthfully, look at it: it’s awesome!

This is the style conscious RR for the younger set. It’s the style that drew me in but maybe not how you may be thinking.

Remember those wild times of the 50's and 60's? An era that saw prototype and concept vehicles practically every week. A time and place when imaginations were free to run wild and even encouraged to do so.

Then the 70's and early 80's hit us like diarrhea at the bottom of a port-a-potty trench. Things got a bit brighter in the late 80's and into the 90's but for a very specific reason.

As a kid of the 80's and 90's I remember specifically the idea that one day, I could be a designer and go to art college. Not that you couldn’t in previous decades but the 80's and 90's were a particularly inspirational time for ideas and expansion of the notion of design as a career.

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, maybe it was just my specific teacher(s), or school(s) or city or region: that simply isn’t true however and the 80's and 90's were the era of design. Whereas the 50's and 60's was the era of technological design.

The 50's & 60's designed around new technology where the 80's & 90's designed almost despite or without the bothersome consideration of new technology.

When I first saw the picture of the Velar it immediately brought back memories of those drawings and doodles I/we made as kids to show what cars of the future would look like.

Solid, clean lines, very tight tolerances and almost robotic in nature. The Velar is like a solid chunk of metal with laser etched details in it. The Velar is the concept vehicle we drew 30 years a go.

This years Geneva Motor Show seems to have more concepts cars and ideas than there has been in many, many years. It’s this new generation, the ‘Hipsters’ who are driving us in that direction once again. How refreshing.

Art and science coming together again and showing us a vision of the future that’s bright, exciting and positive.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s easy to get bogged down in the muck being flung about today by certain people and institutions but it’s the Hipsters of tomorrow who will rule the day. And if this is any indication, not just Velar but all of the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, then everything will be ok.
