Kinja'd!!!

Never had an engine build question or a great question this might be the time to ask It. As one of the great things about the podcast and I get to explore around and find it interesting people to interview. Tomorrow night I’ll be interviewing the team that puts 1300 hp than 2 L motors for drag racing and some phenomenal high hp 4 banger street engines too. These guys are experts in the field of high horsepower low displacement motors. If you ever want to know anything about building engines, the business of building engines, or anything along those lines just ask!

I have plenty of little questions involved with building a 4.2l eight that would also apply to 2.1 fourbanger, but it’s not like I have them organized or anything.

Well the episode is going to get recorded tomorrow evening so long as you can get something to this post before tomorrow night around 10 o’clock it’ll probably end up in the show

Something I’ve been wondering about for a while:

When I watch videos about engine rebuilding, I see a great amount of care put into measuring and machining everything for optimal balance and perfect clearances. But this attention to detail doesn’t go into regular mass-production engines, does it? I’m sure there are “acceptable” tolerances, but how “loose” are some of those stock engines from the factory?

I suspect the answer is “a lot”. Given that just as an example Chevy wanted a high level of precision with Corvette engines in the 90s and farmed them out to Mercury Marine rather than try to crank up the precision on a regular line for them in specific.

Great question I’m interested in their perspective on this

How far could they go (hp) in a streetable S2000? Something you could DD but could also withstand trackdays on a road course.

Could they squeeze 10K rpm out of an early(AP1) S2000? 9500rpm?

I’ll ask, I think your user name is a bit of a give away as to why you want to know this tho...

What’s the most horsepower I could get out of an NA Subaru four banger engine for the street?

I’ve got a 4.2L 258 AMC straight 6 engine in a 1988 Eagle Wagon at 196,000km. It’s spec’d new in 1988 at 112 hp and around 210 pound-feet of torque. It uses a very convoluted and crappy double barrel Carter carb with a mile of vacuum lines. I’m good with suspension, but a total engine newbie. I’m pulling the engine out this spring / summer to have totally rebuilt by a shop. What are the best mods besides a turbo or supercharger to get power out of this thing and keep it at the 4.2L volume for nostalgia sake?

I’m already considering converting it with a multipoint fuel injection kit from Mopar. Can I use a high performance camshaft rated for a carb with a fuel injection kit? All the cams I find are rated only for carbs.

Should I have it ported? Change the timing? Keep the crankshaft? What about lifters and valves? What is possible? Should I super/turbo it? it doesn’t need to be a 600hp monster, but if I can get near the 200 hp mark and keep at least the stock torque I’d be ecstatic!

When I watch videos about engine rebuilding, I see a great amount of care put into measuring and machining everything for optimal balance and perfect clearances.

What you are describing is known as “blueprinting”. This is a common step in preparing a race engine, particularly one that must comply to “stock” rules. By carefully rebuilding the engine to tight tolerances, the result is an engine that complies with factory specifications, but achieves more performance than a typical production unit.
